Mayor Eddie L. Moore and the Heath Springs Town Council celebrates trailblazing “gutsy” women during Women’s History Month!
What is gutsy?
Gutsy women have rebel hearts. Gutsy women are a bunch of local mothers. Gutsy women are those who have suffered loss. Gutsy women encourage and inspire others in the face of personal tragedy. Gutsy women take chances. Gutsy women move with precision. Gutsy women are persistent. Gutsy women cry and know how to laugh. Gutsy women hold their heads high when being misunderstood. Gutsy women get the job done. Gusty women are fearless. Gutsy women tackle new things. They wear suits, heels, robes, tennis shoes, aprons and helmets. Gutsy women pray!
The 2019 acclaimed award-winning “The Book of Gutsy Women,” by Chelsea Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton was the inspiration for the 2024 Women’s History Month theme.
The book-inspired docuseries features Hillary and Chelsea as they embark on a thought-provoking journey to speak with pioneering women artists, activists, community leaders and everyday heroes who show us what it truly means to be gutsy.
“I think a gutsy woman is determined to make the most of her own life,” said Hillary Clinton, “but also to tries to use whatever skills, talents, persistence that she has to bring others along.”
In sharing the gutsy women’s stories, the mother-daughter duo profoundly assert that the goal of the concept of “Gutsy” is to hopefully ignite something in all women to see parts of their own lives, whether it’s their own struggles or their own opportunities, and hopefully bring women closer to believing “I can be gutsy, too.”
We honor and stand on the shoulders of many historical greats, such as journalist Ida B. Wells, astronaut Mae Jemison, activist Eleanor Roosevelt, athlete Simone Biles, women’s suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony, pilot Amelia Earhart, humanitarian Mother Teresa, Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg and countless others women who helped to shape the course of history.
Whether they were on the front lines of important protests, representing their country at the Olympics or inspiring fellow women to speak their own minds, these women brought their innovative beliefs and talents to life with dedication, passion and plenty of hard work.
The 2024 Heath Springs Women’s History celebration March 19 turned the lens and focus on local women who make history every day by being daring and courageous in their own arenas.
The words “boldness” and “bravery” personify each of the women acknowledged.
The celebration featured many “female firsts” — CEOs, attorneys, administrators, educators, business women, pastors, artists, photographers, mentors, archivists, initiators and disc jockeys.
A poster collage representing women who have accomplished dreams, pioneered possibilities and cracked glass ceilings by overcoming barriers was distributed to all attending the event. The Spirit of Heath Springs Award was also presented to the honorees.
“The leadership of Heath Springs is beaming with pride as we continue to spotlight the impact that these incredible women are making within the town and surrounding communities,” Moore said. “We salute every gutsy woman and their accomplishments.”
