Lancaster County high school teams competed in different baseball tournaments during spring break. Here's a recap.
Jackets win after rainout
LORIS, S.C. — Rain washed out play in the Mingo Bay Classic at Loris High School on Wednesday, April 3.
Buford was scheduled to play University High School (W.Va.), but the game was canceled due to rain and wet field conditions at the Loris High baseball field.
The Jackets, 12-1, returned to play at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to face Loris and continued play Friday in the Mingo Bay tourney.
Buford opened play in the Mingo Bay Classic, rolling to a 9-2 win over Asheville High (N.C.) on Tuesday, April 2.
Tanner Sellers paced the Jackets with two hits and an RBI. Brayden Morgan had two hits, a walk, stolen base and scored two runs. Trey Ewing drilled two hits, with a walk and scored a run. Jackson Sellers rapped two hits, with a walk and a stolen base.
Jayden McKenzie had a hit, two RBIs, two walks and scored three runs. Austin Catledge contributed a hit, two RBIs, a walk and scored a run.
Mason Deese had a hit, stolen base and scored a run. Gavin Lowery added a hit.
Hunter Gainey earned the win, striking out five. He allowed seven hits, two earned runs and no walks. Gavin Love went two frames and fanned one.
Bruins cap tourney with 2nd tie
GILBERT, S.C. — For the second time in three games, the Lancaster High baseball team battled to a tie in the Sandlapper Invitational at Gilbert High School to cap its tournament play.
The Bruins scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to deadlock the game with Camden at 6-6 on April 3 before the contest was stopped due to the tourney time limit.
Darius Jackson led the LHS offense with two hits and scored a run. Landon Carter had two hits and a stolen base.
Aaron Rucker supplied a hit, an RBI and scored two runs. Ethan Bufford had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Parker McGee contributed a hit, walk and RBI. Simeon Strother rapped a hit with an RBI and a stolen base.
Lancaster came up short in dropping a 6-5 loss to tourney host Gilbert on Monday, April 1.
Lancaster, down 6-1, scored four runs in the top of the seventh, but Gilbert held on for the win.
Darius Jackson took the loss in 4.2 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, six hits and three walks. Jackson struck out three. Bufford went 1.1 innings and gave up a walk and a hit. He fanned one.
Jeremy Dawkins led the offense with three hits, three RBIs, a walk and scored a run. Jackson had two hits. Carter supplied two hits, scored a run and a stolen base.
Bufford had a hit and an RBI. Eli Sistare supplied a hit. McGee drew two walks, with a stolen base and two runs scored.
On Saturday, March 30, Lancaster opened the three-day tournament battling Newberry to an 8-8 tie in a game stopped due to the time limit.
Gilbert scored eight runs in its final two at-bats to force the deadlock.
McGee had two doubles and scored a run. Dawkins contributed two hits, two runs, a walk and an RBI.
Gavin Steen supplied two hits. Strother had a hit, walk and scored twice. Spencer Sims delivered a hit and two RBIs. Tony Shannon posted a hit, two RBIs and scored a run. Rucker added a hit.
Jackets top Vols
HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Class 5A Fort Mill edged Andrew Jackson, 3-2, to open play in the Southeastern Baseball Classic in Hartsville on Tuesday, April 2.
Fort Mill scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to edge the Volunteers, 3-2.
Jackson Madden, who went six innings, took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned runs, five hits and two walks. He fanned three.
John Mark Sowell rapped a double, drove in a run and scored a run. Brady Williams had a hit, stolen base and an RBI. Collin Patterson had a hit, stolen base and scored a run.
Brady Faulkenberry added a hit. Lucas Deese had a walk and stolen base.
AJ continued play in the tourney through Friday, April 5.
