After a two-year process, the new street sign for Hillside High Road was installed March 28 in Heath Springs.
Last August, Heath Springs Town Council changed the name of the road leading to Heath Springs Elementary School from Solar Road to Hillside High Road to honor the historical elementary and high school that educated Black students from 1954 to 1970.
Hillside’s last class graduated in 1970, and that fall, its students were transferred to Andrew Jackson High School in Kershaw, and the school became Heath Springs Elementary.
The Hillside High School Reunion Committee was the force behind the change, begun in 2021, and its members came out to see the installation of the sign.
“We want to keep the memory and legacy of Hillside alive,” said Linda Smith Harris, the group’s treasurer.
Members of the S.C. chapter of the group also include Robert Drakeford, Mary Williams Thompson, Mary Rutledge Brown, John Coleman, John Bell and Shirley Cunningham Harris.
A formal ceremony will be held in May or June for all Hillside School alumni members to attend.
