  • Swinney swell in leading Tigers...

    Seems no matter who coaches the Clemson Tigers’ football team or their status – interim or full-time – he can do no wrong when it comes to the rivalry clash with old foe South Carolina.

    Saturday afternoon was about as good as it gets for Clemson as the Tigers clawed the Gamecocks 31-14. The convincing 17-point win was orchestrated by then interim Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.

  • Buford sports new, familiar look

    The Buford Yellow Jackets’ basketball program sports a new and familiar look for the 2008-09 season.

    Coach Jeff Moyer, who led the Jackets to an 8-16 mark, returns for his second season, while the Lady Jackets, 3-20 last winter, are guided by new coach T.J. Armbrust.

    Moyer said his team is molding into shape.

    INDIAN LAND – Indian Land High School senior softball player Alyssa Hartley has built a reputation as a tireless worker in her career on the diamond.

    That work ethic paid a major dividend Monday afternoon when Hartley signed a softball scholarship to play at Lander University in the Indian Land High School media center.

    “Alyssa drew a lot of attention over the summer from college scouts watching our games,” said Marci Turso of the Charlotte Cobras’ summer softball team which included Hartley. “Alyssa is the heart and soul of our team.

  • County quartet falls in Buford...

    The Buford Jackets’ Preseason boys basketball tournament saw all four county teams tumble in the opening round of play Monday.

    Eau Claire of Columbia rolled to a 70-59 win over Lancaster, Indian Land dropped a 60-50 loss to Lakewood High of Sumter, Lewisville edged Andrew Jackson 51-49 and Buford fell to Class AAAA foe Clover 54-32.

    Eau Claire opened a 44-31 lead on LHS at the half and stayed on top for the 11-point win.

    Dontell Riley led the Shamrocks with 21 points. EC led 49-38 after three periods with each team scoring 21 points in the final period.

  • County teams have tough night in...

    KERSHAW – Lancaster County teams had a tough night in the second round of play in the Hardwood Classic at Andrew Jackson High School on Monday night.

    The Chester girls, who defeated Indian Land 40-26 in the opening round Saturday, rolled to a 75-50 win over the Lancaster Lady Bruins, who received a first-round bye Saturday.

    Chester led 17-14 after one period, but used a 29-7 second-quarter spurt to take a 46-21 lead on the way to the 25-point win.

    Chester led 58-35 after three periods.

  • LHS Lady Bruins, Warriors net...

    Lancaster and Indian Land each posted wins over county foes to highlight the final day of action in the Lancaster County Hardwood Classic on Tuesday night at the Indian Land High School gym.

    The Lady Bruins pulled away in the second half to take a 54-33 win over Andrew Jackson. Host Indian Land cruised to a 56-13 win over rival Buford.

    Lancaster held a 24-18 halftime lead on AJ and stretched it to 41-30 after three quarters. LHS outscored the Lady Vols 13-3 in the final eight minutes to notch the 21-point win.

  • Bruins, Warriors notch wins in...

    BUFORD – Lancaster and Indian Land rebounded from opening-round losses to notch wins over county foes on Tuesday night in second round play of the Buford Preseason Invitational at Buford High School.

    Lancaster, which fell to Eau Claire of Columbia in the first round, routed Buford, taking a 89-55 win over the host Jackets.

    Lancaster extended a 27-17 lead after one period to 55-27 and continued to build on its margin for the 34-point win.

    The Bruins placed five players in double figures, with Ron Trapps netting 20 points.
