  • Jackets honor fall sports stars

    BUFORD – Fall’s finest took the maroon and gold spotlight at the annual Buford High School fall sports awards in the BHS cafeteria Monday night.

    Ace athletes in football, volleyball, cross country and competitive cheer were honored for their performances.

    The Buford High football team, which finished 7-4 and earned a third-straight playoff bid, honored senior linebacker Noah Vincent as the Jackets football MVP and Best Linebacker.

  • Watts signs with 49ers

    Markees Watts’ anticipation for a special day ended Wednesday morning in the Lancaster High School media center.

    Watts, a four-year starter for the Bruins, took advantage of the NCAA’s early signing period to sign with the Charlotte 49ers, who had received an oral pledge from him earlier this month.

    “I’m excited,” said Watts as he smiled with his parents, coaches and teachers watching. “I’ve been looking forward to this since my ninth-grade year.”

    Watts has been with the Bruins since his freshman year.

  • Vols wrestlers sweep region quad meet

    The Andrew Jackson High wrestlers, rated third in the latest Class A-AA state poll by SCMAT, swept on the mat, taking a Region IV-AA quad match victory Friday night at rival North Central.

    The Vols, 12-4 on the season, topped the host Knights, 41-31, Cheraw, 49-24 and Chesterfield, 60-18.

    AJ was led by five wrestlers who each posted three wins on the night, including Daniel Barfield (106), Matthew Kirk (113), Dalton Mackey (120), Hunter Haven (160) and Kalab Haven (170).

    Aiden Hinson (132) registered a 2-0 effort.

  • Lady Jackets rebound with win at Great Falls

    GREAT FALLS – The Buford High School girls basketball team, coming off a pair of tough Region IV-AA losses, returned to the hardwood and posted a solid non-region road win over Class A foe Great Falls High School on Tuesday night.

    The Lady Jackets’ 47-21 win gave Buford a split with the Red Devils.

    In the boys game, Great Falls, with a strong finish, took a 63-41 win over the Jackets.

    Buford, in the varsity opener, took an early lead on the Lady Red Devils and steadily stretched the margin to the final 26-point verdict.

  • Hinkle signs with Chants

    Lancaster High School star golfer Brady Hinkle was beaming Friday night at a place he’s often shined.

    Hinkle, who has had his share of success at the Lancaster Golf Club, secured his future, signing with the Coastal Chanticleers to play golf at CCU.

    “I’ve always loved going to the beach and spending the next four years and playing the sport I love, I couldn’t think of a better place,” Hinkle said. “Coastal and Myrtle Beach feel like home to me.”

  • Lady Bruins win for split

    The Lancaster Bruins capped pre-holiday hoops play with a split with the host Chester Cyclones on Friday night.

    Lancaster, which swept the Cycs at LHS on Tuesday night, could only manage a split.

    The LHS girls, 6-2, notched their sixth straight win, downing the Lady Cyclones, 76-40.

    Lancaster couldn’t complete the hardwood broom job as the Cyclones avenged their lone loss of the season in a 66-63 win in the nightcap.

  • AJ posts two wins against Central High

    PAGELAND – Andrew Jackson grabbed wins in both games against host Central High School of Pageland on Friday night.

    The AJ girls dominated the Lady Eagles for the entire game, walking off the court with a 55-32 victory.

    The Vols had a tougher time securing their 43-39 victory, having to trail the Eagles until 3.0 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

    The AJ boys fell behind early in the first quarter, 10-7, and trailed by seven at the half, 22-15.

    Fouls were a factor for both teams.

  • Cheraw takes two from BHS

    The Buford Yellow Jackets dropped a pair of Region IV-AA basketball losses to host Cheraw High School on Friday night.

    The Lady Jackets, coming off a tough home loss to Lee Central, fell to the Lady Braves, 58-53.

    The BHS boys dropped an 86-57 loss to the Braves.

    The Buford girls battled in the opener before dropping the five-point defeat.

    The Lady Jackets started strong and held a 16-7 lead after one period.

  • Cavaliers clip Warriors

    INDIAN LAND – Indian Land dropped two games to Cuthbertson of Union County, N.C. on Monday night at ILHS.

    The winless Lady Warriors dropped a 56-4 loss and the ILHS boys fell to the Cavaliers, 46-45.

    The boys game was close, with Jaylin Goode hitting two free throws with 2.7 seconds left to give CHS the one-point win.

    Goode actually missed a free throw, but a lane violation gave him a second attempt and he hit both to give the Cavs the narrow win.
