Today's Opinions

  • Writer doesn’t agree with Cook’s comments

I am a longtime Lancaster County resident and I support Barry Faile for sheriff. He has done a great job for us as sheriff. He has put more officers on the street, busted gangs and infiltrated a lot of the drug trade.
I want Faile re-elected because we need him in Lancaster County. I don’t think I am alone in my thinking. Republicans and Democrats alike appreciate and support Faile.

  • Educators deserve honors in Hall

The Lancaster County School District Hall of Fame, in keeping with the tradition of honoring the work of past top educators, has added four deserving members with the 2012 class.
The elite four includes the late Peter Barry, Charles Clark, Mary Mackey Robertson and Walter Lee Tillman.
Each did plenty to promote education in Lancaster County and earn a special place in Lancaster County education history.

  • County Council needs public input on budget

The Lancaster County budget proposed for fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013) has been posted on the county website for a couple of weeks and has been the topic of discussion by the County Council Finance Committee (council members Larry McCullough as chairman, Jack Estridge and Charlene McGriff) at meetings on April 30, May 7 and 14.

  • Transplants bring a lot to the table besides changes

It is indeed unfortunate that Myrtle Porter “resents these Northern transplants who are changing everything.”
Many of us transplants are not only responsible for this, but also for our many and varied efforts to improve the lives of the less fortunate in our area.
It’s people like Myrtle who appreciate those efforts in one breath and then resent us in the next.
Myrtle and her ilk also need a short history lesson.

  • ILMS PTA thanks Teacher Appreciation Week helpers

The Indian Land Middle School PTA would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who donated to the annual Teacher Appreciation Week.
Special thanks to Carolina Bistro, Wing King of Fort Mill, Jersey Mike’s, Showmars, McDonald’s and Founders Federal Credit Union, as well as several parents and community members.
The teachers and staff have been so appreciative of the special treats all week long.
To everyone who has supported our school, thank you!

  • Editor's note

A letter to the editor, “HOPE appreciates support,” in the Wednesday, May 16, edition of The Lancaster News identified the person arrested for forgery and theft from HOPE in Lancaster Inc. The original press release did not contain the name of the person arrested. When editing the release, The Lancaster News added the person’s name because she had been identified by the State Law Enforcement Division in the newspaper’s prior stories.

  • Good luck to 2012 graduates

Take a good look at today’s Graduation 2012 special section. It’s full of the graduates from all four county high schools.
After their respective ceremonies today they’ll  toss their mortar boards high into the air as they celebrate their graduation with the friends, family, teachers and administrators who helped them along the way.

  • Take the time to thank officers during this week

During National Police Week, which is May 13-19, I’d like to encourage you to take the time to recognize our local law enforcement officers for their service to the Lancaster community.
Our officers’ face many risks and challenges and their sacrifice and service are often taken for granted.
If you encounter a deputy, police officer, highway patrolman or corrections officer, show your support and let them know how much their work means to you this week.
