  • City, county should have done better job with roads

I am writing concerning the way the city of Lancaster and and the county responded to the recent snow and ice storm. The roads in Lancaster were in bad condition. Some form of salt should have been applied to the roads earlier. Even dirt would have been better than nothing.
It is time for a change. The schools were closed all week due to this. There has to be a better way to take control of the situation. Where we live, we were stuck in our own yards for two days. I was unable to go to work until Friday.

  • Woman grateful for man’s help

I went outside about noon on Jan. 14 to get my newspaper out of the box. There was ice on my ramp and I couldn’t get back in the house. There was a young man driving a S.C. Department of Transportation truck who saw my struggling and stopped to help me.
I didn’t get his name, but I want to say a big thank you to him. He was so nice and helpful. People do care.

  • To politicize shooting is unthinkable

With this horrible shooting in Arizona the left has come out again and is showing its true, disgusting nature. They have come out and have tried to show a connection to Sarah Palin, and the tea party. This is insanity. There is no connection between these two and this sick demented person.

  • Shooting an example of government dissatisfaction

The shooting of a congresswoman in Arizona is the latest episode of an individual’s dissatisfaction with government. The media, able to produce an analyst at the sound of a shot, is quick to label the cause, be it the president, a former governor or White House wannabe down to the guy at the convenience store who raises the price of regular gasoline because some oil company executive needs to sweeten his bottom line.

  • Mulvaney at forefront of incivility

Trust The Lancaster News to turn the Tucson, Ariz., tragedy into another feel-good moment for U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney.
In an article on Jan. 12, Mulvaney claimed to be shocked by the carnage that resulted in six deaths, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old, and 14 injuries, including the critical wounding of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
In truth, Mulvaney has been at the forefront of the terrible incivility in politics that may have contributed to the Arizona attack.

  • Welcome to Obamacare

    Welcome to Obamacare

In response to Angelo Constantine’s letter asking why the state will no longer pay Medicare premiums for seniors: Welcome to Obamacare!

  • State won’t pay Medicare premiums for seniors

State won’t pay Medicare premiums for seniors

I recently received a letter from the Social Security Administration.

The first paragraph says it all: “The state of South Carolina will no longer pay your Medicare medical insurance premiums after December 2010. You must pay the premiums beginning January 2011.”

  • It is time to vote on the IL Fire Protection District

Next Tuesday, on Jan. 18, in a non-binding, advisory referendum, registered voters in the Indian Land Fire District will be asked if Lancaster County Council should establish a fire protection district for the Indian Land area of Lancaster County (meaning the Indian Land Fire District) and fund that district through a fee ($75 per home; $75 per 2,500 square foot or fraction thereof for commercial).

  • America becoming a Third World country

WSOC, CNN and FOX news stations recently said that Americans want to pay $4 a gallon for gas to show the world that we were doing great. I thought the Constitution was for the people not crap the people.
We recently filled our car with gas and it cost $2.85 a gallon. BP assured Americans that it would pay for the damages from the Gulf Coast oil spill. I feel like we are the ones paying the cost.

  • Elite ruling class of atheists in charge

Poll after poll reveals that 80 percent or more of Americans claim to be Christian.
So now this Christian nation is ruled by an elite ruling class of atheists who “We the People” chose to represent us.
Recently, our U.S. Congress proved this in a crowning act to choose evil over good by declaring God’s law to be wrong. Our military now must surrender to a minority of gay activists.
I was in the military. The military is not a home base for righteous behavior.
