    As her last week of work with the county came to a close, Cassie Stump sat back in her chair and considered the few small mementos left on her desk.
    Stump, who ended her more than two decades of service to the county last week, had already boxed up most of her belongings, though a few items remained.

    Buford High School landed eight standout players on the 2011 All-Region IV-AA football team.

    The Yellow Jackets  were led by senior two-way standout Marcus Brown, a North-South All-Star game pick.

    Ah, a new year. For most of us, it’s a time of new beginnings – a time to reflect on the previous 52 weeks, and perhaps commit to doing things a little differently in the coming year. We make a commitment to improve our lives in some way, such as spending more time at the gym, spending less time at the office, eating a little healthier, learning a new skill or taking up a new hobby.

    The Lancaster High School wrestling team will carry a huge boost of momentum into its Region III-AAAA mat opener Wednesday night at Northwestern High School of Rock Hill.

    The Bruins, 8-3 overall, are coming off a third-place finish in the Eagles Invitational at Airport High School in Columbia on Thursday.

    Olympic High of Charlotte played the spoiler Thursday night when the unbeaten Trojans knocked Lancaster High School from the prep basketball unbeaten ranks with a 79-72 win in the semifinals of the fourth annual Upward Classic at Dorman High School.

    Christmas 2011 has passed, but in reflecting on the past year, it’s an appropriate time to recall Mama’s words from 1941. She made it a point to remind her only son that I should always be grateful, regardless of circumstances.

    “Be thankful of any and all gifts under the tree,” she said.

    That’s as true now as it was then, especially after I showed my selfish streak on that Christmas Day 70 years ago.
