  • Hilton Head captures Dixie Majors state championship


    Hilton Head, forced to a final game, rebounded with a 17-4 win over Irmo to capture the Dixie Majors state baseball championship at Lancaster High School’s Doomsday Corner on Wednesday, July 17.

  • P-31 falls to Greenville



    The Lancaster Post 31 Legion team dropped a  7-2 loss to the Greenville Generals in the opening game of second round postseason play Wednesday, July 17 at Eggleton Field.

  • Galls on trees are caused by insects

     While walking to the mailbox one sunny morning, I saw odd-looking spheres hanging from one of the young white oaks. 

    About the size of golf balls, they were white with a few brown spots and fuzzy.

    Several days later I saw more on another tree. Having no idea what they were, I made a note to ask our S.C. Forestry Commission Project Forester Roy Boyd to take a look on his upcoming visit.

  • SPCA to give pets hope in new homes

     A new animal rescue group is forming in Lancaster in the hopes of lessening the number of animals that pass through the doors of Lancaster County Animal Control.

     Lancaster resident Diana Knight said she’s been fostering animals for a few years and finally decided that Lancaster needed some help in terms its homeless animal population as well as the number of animals that are put to sleep at the shelter each year.

    The American Lancaster Post 31 senior team defeated Dalzell Shaw Post 175, 8-3, Sunday, July 14, at Harvey Eggleton Field.
    With the win, Post 31 advances to the second round of the playoffs.
    Post 31 jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Lancaster scored four more runs late to put it away.
    Post 31 was lead by Dustin Eddins with three hits.
    Wyatt Duncan and  Trey Payne had two-run hits.

  • Leaving a mark at USCL

    University of South Carolina Lancaster officials invited community members to leave their mark on Founders Hall, Friday, July 12, during a beam signing ceremony to celebrate another milestone in the long-awaited building’s construction.

    In all, nearly 100 people, including construction workers, county residents, students, business leaders and local and state politicians, joined with university officials to sign the last I-beam to be set in the 40,000-square-foot building’s steel frame.
