  • Man arrested in Thursday arson of mobile home

    The neighbor of a man whose mobile home was engulfed in flames early Thursday, Aug. 1, was arrested this week on charges of arson and burglary.

    Donald Joseph Wheeler III, 27, 3231 Cedar Circle, was arrested Friday, Aug. 2, on charges of first-degree burglary and third-degree arson, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release.  

  • DHEC cuts 7 positions at health department

    Lancaster County Health Department has undergone more changes.

    Jim Beasley, a spokesman with S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, has confirmed that the local department, 1833 Pageland Highway, has lost seven administrative positions.

    The Lancaster News recently heard rumors of a change. An anonymous caller last week told the newspaper seven of the health department’s employees had their jobs affected. The woman said that of those seven employees, three decided to retire while the other four are being transferred to Richland County.

  • State releases test scores

    Despite mixed results among county schools under the state’s new letter grade method of representing progress toward federal Secondary Education Act (ESEA) scores, the Lancaster County School District, as a whole, continued to perform above both federal and state expectations.

    The data was released by the state Department of Education Thursday, Aug. 1.

    Dale and Cyndi Williams announce the engagement of their daughter, Kayla Williams, to Dillon Hydrick, all of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 4 p.m. Sept. 28, 2013, at Springdell Baptist Church.
    Miss Williams is the granddaughter of Diane and Jimmy Baker and Gulva and Mary Lee Williams, all of Lancaster.
    She is a 2006 graduate of Buford High School and earned an associate’s degree in science in 2010. She works in sales.
    Mr. Hydrick is the son of Jimmy and Stacy Hydrick of Lancaster.

    Bobby and Mochelle Jackson announce the engagement of their daughter, Elizabeth Hope Jackson, all of Lancaster, to Justin Wayne Mackey of Waxhaw, N.C.
    The wedding is planned for 6 p.m. Aug. 10, 2013 at Coker Ranch.
    Miss Jackson is the granddaughter of Charles and Janice Mathis and Bob and Pat Jackson, all of Lancaster. She is a 2007 graduate of Buford High School and is a stay-at-home mother.

    Melroid Lynn Sr. of Fort Lawn announces the engagement of his daughter, Tawanda Lynn, to Christopher Frazier, both of Lancaster.
    The wedding is planned for 2 p.m. Sept. 28, 2013, at Red Hill Baptist Church in Lancaster.

  • Clayton and Patricia Carnes celebrate 50 years

    Clayton and Patricia C. Carnes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 29, 2013, with a party at the Historic Lancaster County Courthouse given by their children.
    They were married July 4, 1963, in Lancaster.
    They have two children, Scott Carnes and his wife, Linda, and Stefanie Carnes Stacks and her husband, Blake, and five grandchildren.
    Clayton retired from the S.C. National Guard, from the S.C. Department of Corrections and from Joslyn Clark Control. Patricia is a Mack Truck Inc. retiree.

    Kayla Ann Hallman and Darrell Allen Taylor were married at 5:30 p.m. April 6, 2013, at Unity ARP Church in Lancaster by the Rev. Charles Hammond.
    The bride is the daughter of Vernon and Teresa Hallman of Lancaster. She is the granddaughter of George Howle of Lancaster and the late Willene Griffin Howle and of Wilda Sturgis Hallman of Lancaster and the late Kenneth Hallman. She is a 2005 graduate of Buford High School and a 2012 graduate of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy. She works for CVS as a pharmacist.

    Lindsey Marie Fox and James Heilig Wilkinson IV were married at 7 p.m. Aug. 3, 2013, at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church in Charlotte by the Rev. John Patrick Giuliani.
    The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William August Fox, III of Matthews, N.C.. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Margaret Shalenik Fox of Lancaster and the late Mr. William August Fox II and of the late Mr. William Jackson McMurray and the late Mrs. Doris McDonald McMurray.
