  • How to reduce the threat of runaway wildfires

     Televised images of roaring infernos devastating forests and destroying entire communities in western states have been unsettling. 

    Having experienced frightening grass fires at Cedarleaf, I cannot imagine the terror of landowners facing the recent mega-fires.

    Because superfires are becoming more common, the American Forest Foundation just devoted a large section of its new magazine, “Woodland,” to this topic.

    For almost four years, Sally Deese had an unused gift from her neighbor in the backyard of her Four Oaks farm in the Buford community.

    At one time it was a bale of hay just sitting there.

    But now, the bale of hay in wrapped in vines producing round, ripe and great-tasting watermelons.

    Jacqueline Marie Hunt and NaBarrett Cherard Smith were married Sept. 8, 2012, at Cape Fear Botanical Garden in Fayetteville, N.C.
    The bride is the daughter of Ronald and Carolyn Quenga of Raeford, N.C. She is the granddaughter of Unellear Rogers of Raeford, N.C., and the late Gene Rogers. She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration with concentration in health care from Methodist University.

    The 2013 high school football season opens today as county schools kick off preparation for the upcoming season.
    Each county school has a workout scheduled today, Aug. 2, the first day for preseason drills which open around the state.

    “Now you see me; now you don’t,” Cal explains to Ricky.
    “That is the stupidest nickname I’ve ever heard,” Ricky replies.
    “Is it, Rick? ‘Cuz I think you wish you thought of it,” Cal responds.
    “All right, you got me,” Ricky concedes. “That’s an awesome nickname.”
