  • Deputies find pot plants inside home

    INDIAN LAND – A recent search for a man wanted on a bench warrant in another county led authorities to the discovery of marijuana plants inside a Panhandle home.

    Aaron Huffstetler, 21; Kayla Nichole Demarco, 23; Cassandra Denise Moffitt, 21; and John Walden, 37, were each charged Aug. 28 with manufacturing marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    The suspects reportedly live at 9225 Wallace Park Lane, Indian Land.

    Deputies came to the home that morning looking for Walden.

  • Gold mine plans spark concerns

    Intense disagreement over rezoning plans by Haile Gold Mine almost got one resident removed from the podium at Lancaster County Council’s Aug. 27 meeting. 

    Danny Terry, who lives in the county’s Flat Creek community and has opposed the gold mine at several council meetings, returned to speak out against the mine’s operations in Kershaw.

    Terry said he’s worried about the environmental and health impacts of the gold mine on surrounding residents. 

  • 50K people didn’t see president Thursday

    My smile turned into a big frown in a matter of minutes. Excitement was quickly replaced with disappointment.

    I was stoked beyond measure to receive highly coveted credentials to see President Barack Obama accept the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday night, Sept. 6, at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.

    I had actually taken the day off from work in March in anticipation of me being there – among more than 70,000 people expected to fill the stadium on the final night of the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

  • The Heat is on

    GREAT FALLS – Dillon Pearson has a dream of meeting Miami Heat 6-foot, 8-inch forward Lebron James. He has an infatuation with the professional basketball player.

    Sitting at his entertainment center, Pearson smiles at he points to James’ photo and career statistics in the top left corner of the TV screen.Pearson said meeting James is tops on his wish list of things he would like to do.

    His second wish, also sports-related, is to attend a Carolina/Clemson football game. Pearson is a Clemson Tigers fan.

    KERSHAW – Andrew Jackson High School senior lineman Nick Ellis can play his share of positions on both sides of the football, but AJ offensive line coach Larry Cox notes Ellis’ greatest asset is as a “team player.”

    The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers’ volleyball team returns a veteran group and they hope the experience will be to AJ’s benefit.

  • Lancaster High swim team sweeps in opener

    The Lancaster High School swim team rolled in its opener Thursday, Aug. 30.

    The Bruins topped the three-way meet with 240 points, followed by Hartsville 42 and Chester 9.

  • I-77 Speedway hosting annual Chester Shrine Race on Saturday

     

    The annual Chester County Shrine Club Race will be held Saturday, Sept. 8 at the I-77 Speedway.

    Race proceeds will go to the Shriners Hospitals For Children.

  • New field is a boost for USCL soccer

    Sometimes it’s not all about the wins and losses.
    Friday afternoon, Aug. 24, it was about a new start for the University of South Carolina Lancaster soccer program.
    For the first time in the history of the school, the USCL Lancers teams were able to play matches on campus.
    As Lancers’ athletic director Rick Walters said, fans watching the matches were watching more than soccer, they were “watching history.”
    The Lancers’ women’s program is in its sixth season, while the USCL men are in their first campaign.

    Ingredients
    Cake:
    3 cups cake flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup butter, softened
    2 and 1/4 cups sugar, divided
    3 large eggs, at room temperature
    1 tablespoon orange zest
    1 and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
    1 cup fresh orange juice
    1- 12 oz. jar orange marmalade

    Frosting:
    3/4 cup heavy cream, chilled
    3 tablespoons sugar
    3/4 cup sour cream, chilled
