  • City OKs accommodations tax after some questions

    Lancaster City Council gave final approval to support Lancaster County's proposed 3 percent accommodations tax earlier this month.

    Council approved the tax with a 4-1 vote on Jan. 8. Mayor Joe Shaw dissented.

    Lancaster County can charge up to a 1.5 percent tax on hotel/motel stays on its own without seeking the approval of county municipalities. Anything greater requires the nod of the county's municipalities, according to state law.

    If they were up late enough, school children probably rejoiced Wednesday night as sparkling snowflakes fell outside their windows, most certainly meaning a snow day off at home for Thursday.

    But alas, they only got a two-hour delay Thursday.

    It also resulted in a two-hour delay for school on Friday.

    The district announced Friday's two-hour delay late Thursday.

    But schools, government and businesses hardly missed a beat after Lancaster County's first winter storm of the season faded softly into the night.

  • Kershaw Elementary nurse wins state award

    KERSHAW – Kershaw Elementary School nurse Susan Plyler was recently named the S.C. School Health LPN of the Year.

    The accolade was given last month by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and the S.C. Department of Education.

    This is the first time a school nurse in Lancaster County School District has received the award.

    Every school district can nominate a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse. There is a separate award for each category.

    On Tuesday, the Columbia City Ballet is coming to Lancaster for the first time to perform "The Nutcracker." But there's a bonus.

    Dancing with the professionals will be 55 students from area dance studios.
