  • Fired worker alleges race bias in Gerdau Ameristeel lawsuit

    A former employee at Gerdau Ameristeel’s Lancaster plant is suing the company, alleging racial discrimination and retaliation in his May 2016 firing.
    Dirk Mitchell, a Pageland resident, was employed at the company’s Riverside Road facility for two years. He was hired as an inspector on a production line making railroad spikes, according to the suit, and a dispute over an inspection led to his dismissal.

  • Growers focus on buzz-iness

    The Lancaster Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association toured Dixie Bee Supply and Country Store last month to shop, get the buzz on bees, taste locally made raw honey, sample naturally-made skin lotions and observe how to use a manual honey extractor.  

    The association is a group of 25 gardeners and small-scale commercial farmers interested in learning about gardening, farming and farm-related businesses.

  • Springs Memorial names new CEO

    Page Vaughan was named Springs Memorial Hospital’s new chief executive officer on Monday.
    Vaughan, CEO of Chester Regional Medical Center, will continue to oversee the Chester hospital in addition to SMH. Both hospitals are owned by Community Health Systems, based in Franklin, Tenn.
     “I’m really looking forward to it,” Vaughan said Tuesday. “It’s a good team of people in a really nice community.”

  • Long-awaited 521 BBQ opening

    Restaurateur and barbecue pit master Mike Dial no longer has to say “soon” when someone asked when the new location of 521 BBQ is opening in downtown Lancaster.

    Those who ride down South Main Street this week will know it’s time when they roll down their car windows and deeply breathe in the aroma of barbecue pork pit-cooked for 14 hours.

    “I’ve been asked that question thousands of times,” Dial said. “The time was right to do something.” 

  • Anytime Fitness program helps military vets readjust

    Anytime Fitness has joined with the national Lift for the 22 organization to offer free one-year gym memberships to military veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

    The program’s goal is to fight suicide among veterans by bringing them together while also increasing their health and wellness. 

    Karen Phillips, manager of the Anytime Fitness gym on the Lancaster bypass, said one of her relatives suffered from PTSD, and the program is “just something that touched my heart.”

  • Bent Creek breaks ground in IL

    About 25 people gathered in the 88-degree heat July 10 to celebrate the groundbreaking of Taylor Morrison’s newest development in Indian Land.

    Bent Creek, off Jim Wilson Road, is the developer’s second community in Indian Land.

    The first houses in it are expected to be completed in the late fall, said Kevin Granelli, president of Taylor Morrison’s Charlotte division.

    The community will consist of 272 homesites, with two- to six-bedroom homes ranging from 2,200 to 3,750-plus square feet, with prices starting in the $300,000s. 

  • Details leaking on enormous IL shopping center

    Indian Land’s biggest proposed shopping center is inching toward a major announcement soon, but some of the details are already out, including four tenants that have filed construction plans with the county.
    Promenade at Carolina Reserve will have 500,000 square feet available for leasing, making it almost half the size of Carolina Place mall in Pineville.
