    OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - James “Chief” Gainey, 73 formerly of Kershaw, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007. Born in Kershaw, he was the son of the late Sam and Garfielia Gainey. He was married to Clara Catoe Gainey. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service as chief petty officer of radio operations. He served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He was retired from Pratt Whitney after 21 years of service as a materials research and development technician. He was a member of the VFW and the Radio Club of Okeechobee.

    ROCK HILL - D. Marshall Thomas, 68, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007.

    Born in Kings Mountain, N.C., he was the sonof Bertha Meredith Thomas of Rock Hill and the late Haskew James Thomas. He was married to Peggy Moss Thomas.

    He was known as “The Rose Man” for taking roses to nursing homes and the “French Fry Man” for cooking french fries for charitable and church organizations. He was retired from Bowater as a shipping clerk. He was a Baptist.

    BUFFALO - Mr. David Blaine Bogan, 80, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007.

    Born May 27, 1927, in West Springs, he was the son of the late Thurston and Bertie Bogan. He was married to Reba Gregory Bogan for 56 years. He was a 1948 graduate of Union High School. He was a U.S. Marine Corps and World War II veteran. He was retired from Milliken & Co. He was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church, where he was active in the church choir and formerly served on its Administrative Board and Board of Trustees. He was also a former member of the Union County Board of Education.

    KERSHAW - Nellie Christine Chappell Stevens, 65, died Friday, October 12, 2007.

    Born Dec, 24, 1941, in Pageland, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Chappell and Leona Collins Chappell Stevens. She was married to the late Clyde Benjamin Stevens. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was retired from Springs Industries.

    Born June 15, 1931, in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Robert Leroy Vincent and Hattie Mae Baker Vincent. She was married to the late Olin Grady Wilson. She was a charter member of the Taylor’s Grove Baptist Church.

Whitlock and Vivian Melton Whitlock. He was married to Opal “Chic” Shankle Whitlock. He was retired from the Lancaster Telephone Co. as senior vice president of operations. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years, having received the Eagle Badge and Palms and Silver Beaver awards.
