    INDIAN LAND – Idell Elizabeth Crump Chappelear, 81, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.

    Born in Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Fred Lee Crump and Bertie Hargett Crump. She was married to the late Fred Mehlin Chappelear. She was retired from Cone Mills after 43 years of service. She was a member of Stough Memorial Baptist Church.

  • Bertha Roach Griffin, 86

    KERSHAW – Bertha Roach Griffin, 86, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.

    Born in Kershaw, she was the daughter of the late Charlie L. and Sarah Robinson Roach. She was married to the late William Nay Griffin. She was retired from Springs Industries. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church, where she kept nursery for over 40 years and a member of the Clara Williams Prayer Group, WMU and the T.E.L. Sunday School class. She served and chaired the Bereavement Committee for a number of years.

  • Patricia 'Patsy' Whitaker, 67

    Patricia Ann "Patsy" Sinclair Whitaker, 67, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.

    Born Sept. 22, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Clark Charles and Wilma Massey Sinclair. She was married to the late Johnny William Whitaker. She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and retired from Springs Industries.

    Tolson Alexander "Alex" Lowery, 11 months, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008.

    Born Oct. 11, 2007, in Lancaster, he was the son of Brent Lowery and Jenna Shannon.

    Survivors include his father of Heath Springs; his mother of Lancaster; his maternal grandparents, David and Sheree Sawyer of Murrells Inlet; his paternal grandmother, Sharon Lowery of Heath Springs; his maternal great-grandmo ther, Jennie Guy of Lancaster; and his paternal great-grandmother, Jean Lowery of Lancaster.

    Robert Porter, 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008.

    Born Aug. 22, 1925, in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Joe and Sarah Porter. He was married to Ruth Jones Porter.

    Viola West Griffin, 91, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008.

    Born May 10, 1917, in Chesterfield, she was the daughter of the late George W. West and Della Lillian W. West. She was married to the late William Louis Griffin. She attended the Church of God and was a homemaker.

    Survivors include four sons, Ronald Griffin, Roger Griffin and his wife, Barbara, Howard Griffin and his wife, Vickie, and Bill W. Griffin, all of Lancaster; a sister, Emily Jones of Waco, N.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

    Sarah Alice Sullivan, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008.

    Born Oct. 5, 1932, in Chesterfield, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Susan Scarborough Sullivan. She was educated in the Chesterfield County public schools and was self-employed as a care giver.

    David Scott Kennedy, 47, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008.

    Born Dec. 5, 1960, in Lancaster, he was the son of Olan and Doris Kennedy.

    Survivors include his parents; a brother, Jim Kennedy of Charleston; and maternal grandmother, Patry Austin of Oakboro, N.C.

    Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Oakboro, conducted by the Rev. Keith Walters.

    James Walter Colley Jr., 57, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008.

    Born Jan. 13, 1951, in Pearisburg, Va, he was the son of the late James Walter Colley Sr. and Clara Arwood Colley. He was married to Mary Evelyn Merrix Colley. He was a Baptist, and a former volunteer fire fighter in Dublin, Va.

    Survivors include his wife; his mother of Salem, Va; a son, Mike Merrix of Lancaster; and a sister, Leketa White of Roanoke, Virginia.

    Born May 29, 1950, in Chester, he was the son of the late Robert Leroy Corder and Virgie Hall Corder. He was married to Kathy Williams Corder. He attended the New Life Free Will Baptist Church and was a painter.
