  • Shawn David Merritt, 33

    Mr. Shawn David Merritt, 33, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
    He was born May 29, 1979, in Lancaster, a son of John Wesley Merritt Jr. and Linda Faye Galloway Merritt. Mr. Merritt enjoyed shooting black powder weapons and spending time with his family and friends. He especially loved his daughter, Caylin.
    A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Merritt will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 29, 2012, at Lancaster Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wesley Campbell officiating. Entombment will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park mausoleum.

    Bishop Iola Bell Cunningham, 94, died Wednesday, June 20, 2012. A daughter of the late Frank and Delphine Brevard Bell.
    Public viewing and memorial service will be held today, June 29, 2012 from 5 to 9 p.m., at Bethesda New Life Gospel Church; also from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012, at the church, 759 Kenilworth Ave. NE Washington, DC, conducted by the the Rev. Jessie L. Richardson Jr., with burial at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD 20722.

    HEATH SPRINGS – Funeral services for Lucille Dease Campbell, 88, will be held Saturday, June 30, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.  The Rev. Buddy Thomas will officiate.
    The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m.

    Sylvia Mae Bailey Worthington, 88

    Mrs. Sylvia Mae Bailey Worthington, 88, died peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.  Affectionately called Mi Mi, she was surrounded by her dear friends and family in days preceding her death. Sylvia was born in Kershaw on Feb. 29, 1924.

    Willie C “Sonny” McIlwain, 82, died June 24, 2012.  

    He was the son of the late Susie McIlwain Thompson  

    Survivors include a sister, Susie Wade of Lancaster.

    Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012, at David Stand AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Martin Bouler, with burial in the church cemetery.

     COLUMBUS, OHIO – Thomas Grady McGee, 76, passed away peacefully, Friday, June 22, 2012, at the Zusman Hospice, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 17, 1936, in Lancaster, to the late Willie L. and Bertha L. (Knight) McGee. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Libby Williams-Long; and brothers-in-law, Joe Dippolito and Clarence Williams.

    Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Geraldene Tims Ivey of Charlotte; father, James H. Gray of Waxhaw, N.C.; a brother, Jamie Gray of  Indian Land; two sisters, Donna Ivey of Charlotte and Renee Walker of Wilmington, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Eula Tims of Lancaster; and paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Ivey of Statesville N.C.

    KERSHAW – Martha Dunn Gardner, 90, died Saturday, June 23, 2012.

    Survivors include daughters, Louise Faulkenberry of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Judy Polson of Kershaw; two sons, Gary Gardner of Heath Springs and James Gardner of Lancaster; 10 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; 

    Services were Tuesday, June 26, in Buffalo Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. James Way, Donald Coppedge and Curtis Cameron.
