    On Feb. 15, 1956, Silas C. McMeekin, president of South Carolina Electric & Gas Co., got together in Columbia with four of his business friends and decided to create a private club where they could have lunch and do business. They went to work selling memberships, picking a name, buying a site and building the club.

  • City residents to see tax hike

    City of Lancaster residents will soon see a hike in property taxes and water and sewer fees – increases that will help pay for a number of additions, such as more police officers.
    City Council unanimously passed final reading Tuesday, June 26, of its $21.49 million budget for 2012-13.
    The vote was 6-0. Councilman John Howard was absent.
    The new fiscal year begins today, July 1, and ends June 30, 2013.

  • Shirley Wright, 73

    Shirley Jean Plyler Wright, 73, widow of the late James “Jim” Wright, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at her home. She was born Nov. 23, 1938, a daughter of Nae Plyler and the late Ernestine Hollins Blackmon. Mrs. Wright was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. She was an avid cat and animal lover.
    A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Wright will be held today, July 1, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Oak Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Cliff Henson and Thurmond Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in the Oak Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

  • Blanche Culvern Sullivan, 97

    KERSHAW – A graveside service for Blanche Culvern Sullivan, 97, will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 2, 2012, at the Culvern Family Plot in Kershaw City Cemetery. The Rev. Jesse Hegler will officiate.
    Mrs. Sullivan, widow of Mark D. Sullivan, died Friday, June 29, 2012. Born in Kershaw, she was the daughter of the late Fred Sr. and Annie Tarrant Culvern. She was a member of Kershaw Presbyterian Church, which she loved. She was also a graduate of Converse College and a true southern lady.

  • Shawn David Merritt, 33

    Mr. Shawn David Merritt, 33, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
    He was born May 29, 1979, in Lancaster, a son of John Wesley Merritt Jr. and Linda Faye Galloway Merritt. Mr. Merritt enjoyed shooting black powder weapons and spending time with his family and friends. He especially loved his daughter, Caylin.
    A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Merritt was Friday, June 29, 2012, at Lancaster Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wesley Campbell officiating. Entombment was in the Lancaster Memorial Park mausoleum.

    KERSHAW – Funeral services for Oberia Young Estridge, 92, will be held today, July 1, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Todd Gandy will officiate.

  • Miss Jean Carol “Gigi” Taylor, 87

    Miss Jean Carol “Gigi” Taylor,  87, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at the Presbyterian Communities in Florence where she was a resident. She was born April 2, 1925, in Lancaster County, the daughter of the late John Oscar Taylor and Ann Cook Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was a graduate of Lander College with a degree in business and worked for Springs Industries’ Customer Service Center for most of her adult life. She was formerly active with Leroy Springs Senior Citizens Club, the Senior Circle, and the United Methodist Women.

    Funeral services for Dyanna Lynn Ogborn, 61 (39 and holding), will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Sand Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Chadwick Ivester will officiate. Burial will follow in Kershaw City Cemetery.

  • Cliff Moss, 58

    Cliff Moss, 58 of Lancaster, formerly of Greenville, left us to be with the Lord June 22, 2012.
    He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Moss; and a son, Drew Moss; and his mother, Faye Moss of Greenville.
    He is survived by brothers Joe, Van and Stoney Moss.
    He is preceded in death by his father M.V. Moss.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday June 30, 2012, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Greenville.
    A memorial service will be held at the home of his son, 5009 Lyle Rd, Richburg from 5 to 8 p.m. July 14.
