The Indian Land Warriors’ wrestling team opened the second half of its season with a sweep of Charlotte, N.C., area foes Myers Park and Providence on Tuesday night.

Indian Land topped Myers Park 37-25 as the Warriors built a 30-12 lead and stayed on top for the 12-point win over the Mustangs.

In the victory over Providence, the Warriors forged a 42-4 lead and were in control for the 51-23 victory.

“This was a good start to the second half of our season,” IL coach Rondale Truesdale said of the Warriors, who improved their record to 9-7. “We still have a lot to work on, but we’re getting better.”

The Warriors’ effort included two pins each from Taylor Pendleton and Devin Curtsinger.

“This was Devin’s first match with the team since returning from an injury before the season,” Truesdale said. “He was aggressive out there and did well. It was good to have him back with us.”

Michael Bryant and Jared Smith each had a pin and a decision for IL. Logan Creed posted a major decision and a decision for the Warriors.

Indian Land is back in action tonight for the two-day Bearcat Invitational at Rock Hill High School.

“This marks the middle part of our season and it will be a good chance to see how far we’ve come,” Truesdale said.

Bruins fall to Trojans

Northwestern used a 27-5 flurry to snap an 18-all tie and post a 45-23 Region IV-AAAA wrestling win over Lancaster High on Wednesday night.

The match, after seven weight divisions, was deadlocked at 18-all, but the Trojans used three decisions and a pin to forge a 33-18 lead on the way to the 22-point victory.

“I felt our wrestlers competed well,” LHS coach Leon Boulware. “The matches were close and the key is learning to finish those close matches.

“We need to keep working to get better,” he said. “Our effort is there and we’re making progress.”

LHS pin winners included Gabe Campo, Devonta Montgomery and Adam Varney. D.J. Harris posted a technical fall.

“All those wrestlers did well,” Boulware said. “In a couple of other matches, we were very close to pins, but couldn’t complete it, but we will work on that.”

Lancaster, 8-4, 0-1, hosts region foe Rock Hill and Hartsville on Tuesday in a tri-match.
