Warriors sweep Rams in region play

The Indian Land High boys basketball team now has a streak going the way they want.
The Warriors, after dropping their first five games of the 2015-16 season, notched their second straight victory, taking a Region IV-AA win over Chesterfield at the Rams’ gym on Dec. 18.
IL, which topped Cheraw 66-61 on Dec. 15 at home, made it two straight in league play, posting a 68-42 win over the CHS Rams on Friday.
The Warriors’ win gave IL a sweep of the Rams.
The Warriors, 2-5, 2-0, opened a 15-12 lead after one period and pushed their edge to 31-21 at the break.
Quantra Taylor, who led IL with 19 points, hit 13 points in the first half.
The Warriors extended their edge to 17, 50-33, before taking the 26-point decision.
“I thought we played better in the second half,” IL coach Nate Smith said. “We didn’t play well in the second quarter.
“I was concerned we might overlook this game after the win over Cheraw, but Jerrick Palmer came off the bench and gave us a spark for the win.
“Playing those tough games early on is making a difference for us,” Smith said. “We took our lumps in those games, but I think it helped us get better.”
Taylor tallied 19 to pace IL. Mark Morton and Austin Boatwright each scored 11 points. Palmer hit nine.
Shamon Alston netted five. Markese McCloud and Hugh Harvin hit three points each. Douglass Tutt netted two as did Andrew Milton and Lewis Johnson. Caleb Blue added one.
John Johnson led CHS with 17 and Makhal Gaston added 10.
u The Lady Warriors rolled in the region opener as they posted a 50-24 win over the Lady Rams.
IL bolted to an 11-1 lead and cruised to the 34-point win.
The Lady Warriors led 22-13 at the half and only allowed 11 second-half points.
Nia Pressley hit 16 to pace the Lady Warriors.
Kate Komorous and Breanna Yacoob each scored 10 points.
Nikiyea Gordon hit six and Tianah Miller added four.
Meghan Martin and Adriana Wilson each tallied two points.
Shea Evans and Briana Rivers scored five points each to lead the Lady Rams.
Bulldogs blitz LHS
Butler rolled to a 94-54 win to open play in the Y.C. Winborn Memorial Holiday tournament at Rock Hill High School on Dec. 18.
The Bulldogs raced to a 25-4 lead after one period to lead 45-24 at the half. Butler put five players in double figures, with D.J. Little leading the way with 18 on six treys.
Geralle Gates hit 15 for Butler.
RaeQuan Scott, Jah’ll Carter and Jeremy Spencer each tallied 12 points.
Lancaster, 3-4, was led by Nehemiah McGriff with 15 points.
Qua McCarter scored 13 for the Bruins.
Lewis Johnson and Kamarkio Cloud each netted six.
Tee Tinsley and Desmond Ricks added four points each. Darius Robinson scored three. Jai Stevenson hit two and Taron Heath added one.
Lancaster returned to Rock Hill on Dec. 19 to face the loser of the game between Wilson High of Florence and South Mecklenburg High of Charlotte.
The Lancaster High School girls team, 6-2, is off until a Jan. 5 home game with Monroe High of Union County, N.C.
The girls’ game is at 6 p.m., with the boys to play at 7:30.
Lancaster opens region play at Broome High of Spartanburg on Jan. 9.
