Nature trail opens Thursday

University of South Carolina Lancaster
The public is invited to the official opening of the nature trail at the University of South Carolina Lancaster at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22. The trail is the result of the combined work of USCL, the Catawba Master Naturalist Association and Boy Scout Troop 71. The half-mile of gently sloping trail meanders through pine forests, bottom-land hardwoods, stream-side habitats and upland hardwoods with various plant and animal life.
The trail has two entrances, the north entrance is behind the Gregory Health and Fitness Center and the south entrance is behind the picnic shelter, down the hill and beyond the tennis courts. Trail guides and maps are available at each entrance to help explain some of the natural areas encompassed in the trail system.
Members of the Catawba Master Naturalist Association will be trail guides during the event.
The trail, which features the diverse habitats of the Carolina woodlands, is open to the public during daylight hours. Trail walkers are asked to observe the natural habitat and show respect by not handling or removing plants and animals. Visitors are also asked to leave their guides in the boxes at the exit and to leave the trail clean.
