Duke Energy had more than 500 power outages reported shortly about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, said Rick Jiran, the utility’s director of government and community relations.

The initial cause of the outages was unknown.

"We have 575 outages in the Lancaster area right now,” Jiran said. “The bulk of these are on North Main, East Arch and West Meeting streets.”

Major problems attributed to the overnight freezing rain storm were kept to a minimum. Jiran said.

"We started out the day in good shape with only about 70 outages,” he said. “We were spared from the storm for the most part. I don’t know the exact cause for these 500, they only happened about 20 minutes ago, but we’re checking on it.”

However, Jiran said a short time later the outage was attributed to a circuit that "was dropped" while repairs were made.

The power was restored about 12:45 p.m., Jiran said.
