WASHINGTON – Mick Mulvaney is headed to the West Wing.
President Trump on Friday named the Indian Land ex-congressman – and current White House budget director and acting head of the federal consumer watchdog agency – his acting chief of staff.
“I am pleased to announce that Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management & Budget, will be named Acting White House Chief of Staff, replacing General John Kelly, who has served our Country with distinction,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
“Mick has done an outstanding job while in the Administration. I look forward to working with him in this new capacity as we continue to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Mulvaney, 51, who was elected the 5th District U.S. representative four times before resigning to join the Trump administration in 2017, tweeted out his reaction to the new assignment.
“This is a tremendous honor,” he wrote. “I look forward to working with the President and the entire team. It’s going to be a great 2019!”
Mulvaney runs the Office of Management and Budget, making him the president’s point person on spending priorities. For the past year, he has also served as acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CNN reported Friday that Mulvaney will step down from his role as OMB director.
Mulvaney will become Trump’s third chief of the staff in the past two years.
He will replace John Kelly, a retired four-star Marine  general, whom Trump ousted as chief of staff last week. Kelly is expected to remain on the job through the end of the year.
Earlier Friday, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie withdrew from consideration to serve as Trump’s chief of staff. Nick Ayers, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, was offered the job by Trump last weekend but turned it down.
Mulvaney was elected to the House in 2010 as a member of the Tea Party movement and is known for being an outspoken fiscal conservative.
He and wife Pam live in Indian Land and are the parents of teen triplets. Since going to work for the president, Mulvaney has commuted home every few weekends.
