The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on an armed robbery that happened late Wednesday night at the Family Dollar store on Kershaw Camden Highway in the Elgin community.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, the store was robbed just before 10 p.m., while two workers and several customers were inside. Several bystanders were also in the parking lot.
“This was a bold armed robbery which occurred in front of at least nine witnesses including children, and we need to get this man identified and arrested as soon as possible,” said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile.
The suspect is described as a black man with a medium height and stocky build. He was dressed in a gray hoodie, khaki pants, light-colored sneakers with dark trim around the toes and a light blue ball cap. His face was partially covered and he wore dark gloves. He was armed with a silver revolver.
The incident was captured by the store’s video surveillance system.
The robber came inside, demanded money from an employee and then ran back out the door. He ran across Kershaw Camden Highway near Elgin Volunteer Fire Department, the sheriff’s statement said.
Witnesses also reported seeing a light-colored sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Malibu or Cruz, in the vicinity about the time of the robbery.
The robber did not fire his weapon and no one was injured, the statement reads.
Faile noted the Family Dollar suspect resembles the man who robbed the Market Express Exxon in Indian Land on June 5.
“Investigators in nearby jurisdictions are working robberies of businesses by a man with similar physical characteristics and clothing,” he said. “Our investigators are working with other agencies to see if these cases are related.”
