The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reported that a house fire on Billings Drive earlier this month was caused by lightning.

The fire occurred at a home in the 1600 block of Billings Drive during a lightning storm Friday, June 10.

The incident report said the homeowner called 911 at 8:47 p.m. after noticing a flash of lightning and seeing a storage building on fire.

The report said the fire jumped from the storage building to the house and, in addition to structural damage, caused extensive damage to the family’s 1999 Toyota Tercel.

No one was injured in the fire.

The report said the storage building was a total loss. Damages to the home and car were estimated at $35,000.

The family, which had no homeowners insurance and only liability on the car, was helped by the Red Cross.

Gooches and McDonald Green volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze.
