Landfill not a good thing for our county

-A A +A

Norm Zimmer

Editor’s note: Norm Zimmer sent this letter to County Council members.
Many Lancaster County residents are dismayed about the proposed landfill and its enormous negative ramifications on our fair county. Besides the disturbing aspects involving secrecy about the project, we’ve learned that scores of garbage trucks will be a regular, constant and unwelcome sight on our scenic roads.
The already intolerable litter problem that exists in Indian Land and other parts of Lancaster County will be exacerbated by trash blowing and spilling out of dozens of garbage haulers six days a week, not to mention the increased wear and tear on our road system by a couple hundred heavy trucks barreling down U.S. 521 and numerous other byways on a daily basis.
This is not a good thing for our people. It is a very bad, ill-conceived plan that needs to be repealed immediately. I pray that the majority of the council members will step back from the brink, reconsider and then repeal Ordinance No. 1073. Don’t let pride stand in your way. The best course of action is to kill this plan before harm is done. You will be applauded for having the guts to change your position and for not being inflexible. Your first concern is the well-being of the populace. We don’t want this landfill. It is not a good idea. Please stop it before it’s too late.
