Lancaster County's buses are ready to roll

-A A +A

Bryan Vaughn, Safety/Transportation Director

In just a couple of weeks, more than 6,000 students will begin boarding school buses to ride to and from school; more than 70 buses will operate in Lancaster County School District to accomplish this task.

When the school year ends, our buses will have traveled more than 1.25 million miles during the 2012-13 school year.

School bus travel is statistically one of the safest modes of transportation on the road; this safety record directly results from the intense training our drivers receive and the safety design of our buses.

As we begin the school year, it’s important for our community to be mindful of school bus safety. If you have a child who will be riding a bus to or from school, please take note of the following safety tips:

  •  Always arrive at the bus stop on time and never run to the stop.
  •  Always cross the road at least ten feet in front of the bus.
  •  Never walk beside or behind the bus.
  •  Always wait for the school bus in a safe location that is off the roadway.
  •  Never talk to strangers at the bus stop, and always report any unusual activity to the bus driver.
  •  Parents should supervise small children at the bus stop.
  •  Remember the 12-foot-safety zone around the bus that students should enter.
  •  If you’re driving a vehicle at any time during the school day, please take extra care near a school bus or school zone.
  •  Remember to stop any time a school bus is stopped for loading or unloading. You must always stop on two-lane roadways and can never pass a school bus from behind once the warning lights are on.
  •  Be mindful of school speed zones and reduce your speed accordingly.
  •  Watch for students crossing roads and always anticipate the unexpected.
  •  Remember traffic is always heavier at the beginning of the school year, so plan accordingly by getting an early start to avoid being late.

Let’s all work together to help our bus riders make sure our children get to and from school safely.
