The Lancaster Post 31 Legion baseball junior team continues to prevail in tight games.

The P-31 juniors, 5-2, edged Rock Hill Post 34, 2-1 on Tuesday, June 10 at Lancaster’s Eggleton Field.

The one-run win capped a three-game P-31 junior team homestand with a 3-0 record.

Byron Heigler turned in a stellar mound effort as he went the route and allowed five hits and two walks.

He fanned no batters, but was backed by stellar defense as P-31 posted its third straight error-less game.

Lancaster juniors coach Paul Caskey saluted the solid play of shortstop Holden Payne.

“He had a strong defensive game and we turned a key double play in the fifth inning to aid the win,” Caskey said. “We did a good job with key defense, clutch hits, heads-up baserunning and good pitching.”

Payne paced the Lancaster offense with two hits and a RBI.

In the Lancaster first inning, Payne singled home Trey Rollings, who reached after being hit by a pitch.

Rock Hill came back to tie the game with a run in the top of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Lancaster regained the lead as Heigler doubled with two out.

Caskey inserted C.J. Brown to run for Heigler.

Rock Hill, in an attempt to pick off Brown, made an errant throw to send Brown to third base. He tallied on another errant throw for what proved to be the winning run.

“In games like this one tonight and other close games, you have to make the most of your chances and we did,” Caskey said. “Any way you can score, you try to get a run because they are tough to get.”

Heigler, Eric Miles and Cooper Ledbetter each had a hit for Lancaster.

Rollings and Brown each scored a run.

Lancaster returns to League V juniors play with a road game with York Post 66 on Thursday, June 12.

The Lancaster Post 31 senior team, idle since May 28, is slated to return to League V action as the P-31 seniors host Rock Hill Post 34 on Monday, June 16 at 7 p.m.

All Lancaster Post 31 Legion home baseball games are played at Eggleton Field, located adjacent to the Lancaster County Fairgrounds.
