Lancaster P-31 prevails in pitcher’s duel at home

The Lancaster Post 31 junior team captured a tight win to up its record to 3-2 on Tuesday, June 3.

The Lancaster juniors, in their home opener at Eggleton Field, snapped a 1-1 tie with a single run in the bottom of the sixth to take the 2-1 win over York Post 66.

The victory was highlighted by a solid pitching effort from Andrew Caskey and Byron Hegler.

Lancaster tallied the winning run in the sixth inning when Hegler had a hit and Jamias Shropshire, running for Hegler, dashed home on Cooper Ledbetter’s RBI-double.

“Our pitchers did an outstanding job and we came up with the key hits in clutch situations,” Lancaster P-31 juniors coach Paul Caskey said. “We also played solid defense in support of our pitchers.

“It was a true team win as we had a solid effort on the mound and came up with big hits and played well behind our pitchers.”

Caskey, the P-31 juniors’ starter, hurled 4.1 innings and allowed two hits and two walks. He struck out four to earn the mound win.

Hegler, is solid relief, went 2.2 frames and whiffed one with no walks.

“It was a pitching duel and we were able to come out on top,” Paul Caskey said.

Lancaster, down 1-0 after York P-66 scratched for a run in the top of the third inning, tied the game as Brady Horton reached on a fielder’s choice and Trey Rollings followed with a walk to move Horton in scoring position at second base.

Eric Miles then delivered a RBI-hit to stalemate the game at 1-all.

The game stayed tied until the P-31 juniors’ sixth when Ledbetter’s double scored Shropshire with what proved to be the winning run.

Miles and Ledbetter each had a hit and drove home a run. Rollings and Hegler each added a hit,

Horton and Shropshire each scored a run.

“We didn’t have a lot of hits, but we made the most of what we had,” Caskey said.

The Lancaster P-31 junior team hosted Clover Post 38 on Thursday, June 5. The juniors will also be at home Tuesday, June 10 when they host Rock Hill at 7 p.m.

The Lancaster senior team, 2-1 on the League V season, will return to action June 16 when Post 31 will be at home to face Rock Hill Post 34.

All Lancaster P-31 home games for the junior and senior squads are at 7 p.m. at Eggleton Field located adjacent to the Lancaster County Fairgrounds and the Lancaster P-31 Legion post.
