A night after a tough loss to league unbeaten Indian Land, the Buford Yellow Jackets were on target in a 62-44 region win over Central of Pageland on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at CHS.

The Jackets, who dropped an 11-point loss to Indian Land on Monday, Feb. 3, took control in the second period on the way to the 18-point win.

The Buford boys’ victory gave BHS a split after the Lady Jackets dropped a 51-49 loss in the varsity opener.

The nightcap belonged to Buford, which took an early lead and steadily pulled away for the solid win.

BHS, 9-10, 2-5, led 13-6 after a period of play and pushed the margin to 22-10 at the half.

Kholby Pate, who netted 13 points, scored 11 in the first half.

In the pivotal third period, Buford used a 19-14 run to forge a 41-24 lead and cruise to the victory.

“We played with lot of energy early,” BHS coach Neil Couch said. “We played hard and very unselfish. Our defense set the tone and we closed strong as well.”

Garrett Crenshaw led Buford with 14, 10 in the second half. Corey Bracey had nine. Druw Rollings and Christian Joplin each netted eight. Orantez Coleman had seven. Tomas Hayden scored two and Wade Lambert added one.

Central had one player in double figures, Travay Hutton who had 13.

In the girls’ game, Central’s Malaia Rivers hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to snap at 49-all tie and give the Lady Eagles the win.

Buford, on its final possession, had a turnover and CHS took the win.

“This was a disappointing loss because it was a game we could have won,” BHS coach T.J. Armbrust said. “We had a chance, but didn’t close the deal.”

Buford bolted to a 17-5 lead as Gabby Davis, who led the Lady Jackets with 23, netted 11 of her 15 opening half points in the first period.

BHS, on top, 29-21 at the half, led 40-33 after three, but Central used an 18-9 finish to net the win. Rivers hit 17 of Central’s 18 fourth-quarter points for the win.

The Lady Jackets, 7-10, 1-6, had 12 points from Autumn Rabon, six in each half.
