Gene Tyson Whitlock, 78,

Lancaster Telephone Co. retireeGene Tyson Whitlock, 78, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007. Born March 25, 1929, in Stanley County, N.C., he was the son of the late John U. Whitlock and Vivian Melton Whitlock. He was married to Opal “Chic” Shankle Whitlock. He was retired from the Lancaster Telephone Co. as senior vice president of operations. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years, having received the Eagle Badge and Palms and Silver Beaver awards. He was past president of United Way of Lancaster, and previously served on the Springs Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, the Lancaster County Children’s Home board and the Economic and Development Board of Lancaster. He also served as vice president of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, president of the Lancaster Kiawanis Club and secretary for the South Carolina Telephone Association. He was an active member of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where he served as superintendent, treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He received an Elder Emeritus Award in March. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brent Whitlock and his wife, Donna, of Lancaster and Kyle Whitlock and his wife, Pam, of Columbia; one sister, Anne Nielsen of Dayton, Va.; one step-granddaughter, Jennifer Bumgardner; and a step great-grandchild, Gibson Bumgardner.He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Hinceman.Services will be 3 p.m. today at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Kyle Sims, with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park.Memorials may be made to First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Boy Scout Troop No. 72, P.O.
