An autopsy will be performed on a Kershaw woman to determine if some type of medical episode led to her death Tuesday in a one-car crash on Beacon Road in Rich Hill.
The victim – 69-year-old Ethel Taylor Hicks of Kershaw – died at the scene, said Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Tony Broome. Hicks will undergo an autopsy Thursday.
“Right now, that’s about all we know,” Broome said. “We don’t know if it was coronary or diabetic in nature, but preliminary indications are that some sort of medical condition was a contributing factor.”
The S.C. Highway Patrol, along with county deputies and emergency workers, responded to the crash about 10:16 a.m. Tuesday in the 2400 block of Beacon Road, about a quarter mile south of Morris Hinson Road.
S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Gary Miller said Hicks was headed north in a four-door 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The car ran off the road and hit a tree, he said. There were no skid marks on the pavement.
Miller said Hicks was not wearing a seatbelt.
“Right now, it’s under investigation,” Miller said.
Lancaster County Coroner Karla Knight Deese said no one witnessed the crash.
