Buford notches two wins over York Prep

The Buford Yellow Jackets swarmed to a stellar finish in taking a sweep of host York Prep with a 79-47 win over the Patriots in Rock Hill on Friday night.
The Lady Jackets opened the night, notching a 49-40 win over the York Prep girls.
The Jackets, 1-4, were coming off a tough home loss to Class AAAA foe South Pointe, which closed with a key run to nab the win at Buford High School on Wednesday night.
This time, the Jackets finished strong to net a solid 79-47 win over the Patriots.
Buford held a 48-40 lead after three periods, but ignited with a sterling 31-7 charge to seal the 32-point win.
“In the fourth quarter, we ran away with our defensive intensity and held them to seven points,” Buford High boys coach Raheem Waller said. “We came out of the gates slow and had turnovers, but in the second half, we played with a little more energy and finished the game strong. This was a good win for us.”
Buford, with a stellar finish, outscored the Patriots, 31-7 in the final eight minutes for the road win.
The Jackets were bolstered by a balanced attack as Tanner Wallace and Shylyn Wright each scored 14 points to pace the BHS win.
Wallace drained four treys and Wright, on his 17th birthday, hit three treys, with nine of his 14 points in the final half.
Rhylee Blackmon scored 13 points, 10 in the Jackets’ final period blitz.
Matthew Hunter hit eight, six in the second half.
Andrew Allen scored eight points, six in the final two periods.
Dede Massey and Justin Hayden had six points apiece.
Tyler Hayes scored five. Isaah Nesbit finished with three and Joe Barrino added two.
The Jackets also boosted their cause, hitting 7-11 at the foul line.
Rod Alexander led the Patriots with 20 points, 11 in the first half.
Kendall Strout scored 11, seven in the first half.
The Buford High girls, 2-4, opened the road sweep, taking a 49-40 win over the York Prep Lady Patriots.
Buford took charge in the second quarter with a 15-10 spree to take a 32-19 edge at the break.
The Lady Jackets showed they came to play, building a 17-9 lead in the first period on the way to the 13-point edge at the break.
The BHS girls held a 40-26 lead after three quarters on the way to the nine-point win.
“I thought we played pretty well for most of the game,” BHS coach T.J. Armbrust said. “We had good ball movement and it paid off with some easy baskets. We are continuing to improve each game. I was proud of our effort and happy to walk away with the win.”
Lady Jackets’ senior Morgan Deese paced Buford with 19 points, 11 in the first half. She netted seven of 10 foul shots.
Hunter Allen scored 12 points, six in each half. Sophie Ribelin and Samone Gaither each hit six points in the BHS win.
Payton Howell finished with four and Paige Davis had two points.
Erin Huskey led York Prep with 13 points, eight in the second half. Kat Williams scored 11, with three treys.
Jermany Mapp added 10 for the Lady Pats.
Buford launched its Region IV-AA schedule with an away game at Lee Central High of Bishopville on Tuesday.
The Jackets host Cheraw on Friday night and will be at home to battle Cuthbertson on Monday.
