  • Rams charge by Vols for 47-15 win

    CHESTERFIELD – The Andrew Jackson Volunteers’ running game came directly into the passing game of the Chesterfield Rams, and the Vols came up short in a 47-15 road loss.

    The fast-starting Rams, ranked 10th in the latest Class AA state football poll, grabbed the lead early and never yielded on the way to the 32-point Region IV-AA win. The game was closest at the end of the first quarter when the Vols trailed 9-8.

  • NGA Red Rose Classic on Saturday

    The third annual NGA Red Rose City Classic Natural Body Building competition is Saturday at the Bundy Auditorium on the University of South Carolina Lancaster campus.

    The pro qualifier meet, hosted by Lancaster native Kennett Washington, will feature divisions for men, women, college students and children.

    “This is my hometown and I want to give back, which is the main reason I brought this event to Lancaster two years ago,” said Washingon, a pro bodybuilder who has competed in bodybuilding for more than 20 years.

  • County trio launches volleyball...

    Three Lancaster County high school volleyball teams will launch their state championship hopes today.

    Region IV-AA champion Buford, fresh off a league title tie-breaker win over North Central High at Andrew Jackson High School last Thursday, will open the Class AA Upper State volleyball playoffs with a home match with Eau Claire of Columbia at 6 p.m. today.

    Andrew Jackson, which finished third in the region behind champion BHS and North Central, will visit Fox Creek today in a first-round match at 6 p.m.

    North Central hosts Keenan High of Columbia.

  • Vespe sparks Junior Jackets to...

    The Buford High Junior Jackets, sparked by Tyler Vespe, posted their first win, a 28-22 victory over host North Central on Thursday night.

    BHS, 1-4, broke on top as Evan Teague scored on a 25-yard run and added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

    NCHS tied the game at 8-all, but Teague hooked up with Vespe on an 80-yard scoring pass to give Buford a 14-8 edge.

    Vespe put the Junior Jackets up, 22-14 with a 24-yard touchdown run. Vespe scored on the conversion.

  • Blue Devils won Upper State...

    The conference champion Heath Springs Blue Devils launched their postseason run, facing Norway High for the Upper State title.

    Norway, 15 miles from Orangeburg, was undefeated and unscored on during the 1967 high school football season.

  • Warriors’ defense delivers 14-6...

    COLUMBIA – The Indian Land Warriors were well rested, having the week off, coming into their Thursday night Region IV-AAA game against the Columbia High School Capitals at Memorial Stadium.

    The Warriors would need every bit of it, particularly the defense, in ILHS’s hard-fought 14-6 win over the Capitals.

    ILHS, 2-6, 1-2, snapped a four-game losing skid with the win over CHS.

  • Lady Jackets region volleyball...

    KERSHAW – The Buford High School Lady Jackets’ volleyball team, for the second time in three seasons, is the queen of the Region IV-AA court.

    Buford, in a tough, tense tie-breaker match for the region volleyball title at Andrew Jackson High School on Thursday, defeated defending Region IV-AA volleyball champion North Central High School, 3-2.

  • Buford holds off Knights for...

     

    BUFORD – Buford held off a hard-charging North Central Knights team that took the Yellow Jackets to the wire Friday night at Buford Stadium.

    Buford recovered a clutch onside kick with 1:14 left to seal the 41-36 win for the Jackets’ sixth victory of the season on BHS Senior Night.

    The Knights outscored 11th-ranked Buford 24-13 in the second half behind the passing of quarterback Bubba Williamson. Williamson threw four TD passes in the final half, but ran out of time.

  • Talented Stallions dash by Bruins

     

    ROCK HILL – The Lancaster Battlin’ Bruins, living up to their nickname as much as anytime on the 2017 football season, gave it a good shot, but top-rated South Pointe had too much firepower in a 45-10 win on Friday night.

    The Stallions, ranked No. 5 nationally with an 8-0, 3-0 mark, celebrated their homecoming win later than expected due to the Bruins’ game effort.

    SPHS, up 31-10 and in control, sealed the game with two quick touchdowns in the final period.
