    The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers’ volleyball earned a little postseason court revenge Wednesday night in the opening round of the Class AA Upper State playoffs in the AJ gym.
    Two seasons ago, Liberty knocked Andrew Jackson out of the playoffs, so for the Lady Vols, it was payback time.
    “We knew it was going to be a battle as Liberty consistently produces strong teams,” AJ coach John Verdugo said. “Liberty’s coach Carla Simpson always has her teams ready to play good volleyball.”

  • Cox captures state crown

    Emily Cox’s clutch eagle putt soared her to a lofty perch she had long sought Tuesday afternoon.
    Cox, an Andrew Jackson High School girls senior golfer competing as an individual in the Class AAA golf tournament at the Carolina Springs Golf Club in Fountain Inn, earned the coveted state medalist.
    Cox, a prep golf competitor for six years, saved her best for last.
    In her final hole of her final round as a prep golfer, Cox sank a clutch 15-foot eagle putt to give her the Class AAA individual state championship.

    The Dirt Track at Charlotte will host the Bad Boy Off Road World of Outlaws World finals this weekend. Racing at Charlotte will be The World of Outlaw Sprint Cars, World of Outlaw Late Models and Big-Block Modifieds of the Super DIRTcar Series.

  • Volleyball teams to launch state...

    Three Lancaster County high school volleyball teams will launch their state title hopes in the state playoffs today.
    Teams from Andrew Jackson and Indian Land will be at home after placing in the top two in regular-season play which ended last week.
    AJ, which fell to North Central, 3-0 in a special playoff for the region volleyball title last Thursday at Buford, will be at home to face Liberty.
    The AJ-Liberty winner advances to face the Gray Collegiate vs. Christ Church winner on Monday.

  • Juniors net win in LHS powder...

    The juniors posted a 28-21 win in the annual Lancaster High School powder puff football game at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night.
    The game is an annual event of LHS homecoming week.
    The juniors opened the scoring as Kiana Howze, who ran for 100 yards, dashed 65 yards for a touchdown.
    Sidney Cauthen and Ashley Abbott also scored in the first half to boost the juniors’ effort in their seven-point win.
    In the second half, Michaela Burton tallied to complete the juniors’ scoring.

  • Foster in North-South

    Three area players, led by Lancaster High School hard-charging running back Ant Foster, have been selected to play in the 69th annual North-South All-Star football game in Myrtle Beach.
    Foster, the 2015 Lancaster County Player of the Year by The Lancaster News, will be joined by North Central High School’s Cedric Cunningham and Lewisville’s Mike Hill.

    The final full week of play in the 2016 Lancaster County high school football season features all games in the county Friday night.
    Lancaster, 4-4 and capping its regular-season home schedule, hosts 7-1 Ridge View at Memorial Stadium.
    Buford, in its final regular-season home game, battles region and county rival Andrew Jackson, 6-2 after an impressive 35-12 comeback win over seventh-ranked Lee Central in Bishopville last week.
    Indian Land, closing its regular-season home schedule, will face Fairfield Central of Winnsboro.

  • Former Warriors' star, USC...

    South Carolina freshman basketball player Rakym Felder, who played one season of basketball at Indian Land High School, was arrested Sunday and charged with several counts, including assault, resisting arrest and public disorderly conduct.
    Felder, a shooting guard from New York, was jailed before being released Monday.
    A team spokeswoman said USC men’s basketball coach Frank Martin was aware of Felder’s arrest and was gathering more information. In accordance to the USC athletic department policy, Felder is suspended indefinitely.
