    The 2014 Comporium Preseson Invitational high school baseball tournament, hosted by Andrew Jackson and Buford high schools, opens play Saturday with four games at the AJ Volunteers’ field.

    The Andrew Jackson field includes the host Vols, Lancaster, Central High of Pageland and Great Falls.

  • Volunteers upbeat about soccer...

    The Andrew Jackson men’s soccer team looks to build upon a solid 2013 campaign that ended in the third round of the Class AA Upper State playoffs last spring.

    The AJ team, which went 16-6 last spring,  will be a mixture of new and old faces on the pitch as the Volunteers begin their 2014 season.

    Gone are the likes of Matthew Woods anchoring the Volunteer defense, Trevor Hammond who was a standout in the midfield, and Luke Kennington, who led the team in scoring and was a standout in the goal as a keeper.

  • Lancers go 3-1 in Pepsi...

    The University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers’ baseball team had plenty of pop in the Pepsi Invitational in Florence over the weekend, Feb. 22-23.

    The Lancers, 9-7, went 3-1 in the round-robin tourney hosted by NJCAA Region X member Florence Darlington Tech.

    USCL capped play with a 7-6 win over Muskegon College (Mich.) on Sunday afternoon.

    Bryan Dye paced a seven-hit Lancers’ attack with a single, double and three RBIs.

    A strong returning cast has Buford High School baseball coach Eric Funderburk upbeat about the Jackets’ diamond hopes this spring.

    Funderburk, in his sixth season at BHS, is determined to reverse a 4-18 finish in 2013.

    “We have a lot of returning experience,” Funderburk said. “We will rely on our returning starters and we have the most pitching depth we’ve had since I’ve been here.

    KERSHAW – Andrew Jackson, in comeback fashion, earned a measure of postseason basketball revenge Saturday, Feb. 22.

    The host Lady Volunteers, with a stirring fourth-quarter rally, avenged a 2013 Class AA Upper State first-round playoff loss with a 50-45 win over Columbia High School at the AJ gym.

    A year ago, the CHS Lady Capitols halted the AJ girls’ postseason hopes with a 45-43 road win.

    LAURENS – Lancaster High School senior wrestler Quinshun “Bubba” Evans continued his dominance on the wrestling mat, improving his record to 44-0 on his way to the Class AAAA 182-pound Upper State championship on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Laurens High School.

    Evans defeated top-seed Ryan Hughes, 3-1 of meet host Laurens High School in overtime of the championship finals on Saturday.
