  • Vols capture region mat title

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson wrestling team captured its first Region IV-AA mat title, going 3-1 on Saturday for a 7-1 region record for the season and the league title.
    AJ, a school-record 25-9 this season in its sixth year of prep wrestling, defeated Buford 38-37, Chesterfield 63-18 and Cheraw 48-33, with the Vols’ lone loss on the day to rival North Central, 36-33.
    The Vols’ overall 7-1 mark gave AJ the region crown.

  • Warriors impress, claim region...

    CAMDEN – The Indian Land Warriors were on a mat mission Saturday and they responded with an impressive run to capture the Region IV-AAA wrestling tournament at Camden High School.
    The Warriors, unbeaten Saturday with four straight wins, including a pair of shutouts, rolled over Chester 47-14, Columbia, 77-0, Camden, 58-15 and Fairfield Central 84-0.

  • Sports Talk: Mary was special to...

    Early Wednesday afternoon as our family approached Zion Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in eastern Lancaster County, my thoughts drifted back to a late summer afternoon.

    It was mid-August, just before the start of a new school year. My wife Anne and I were in a bind.

    We waited at our Arrowood home, hoping the lady – Mrs. Mary McCoy – coming to our house was the answer to our prayers. With the start of school, Anne was headed back to school to continue her work as a guidance counselor.

  • Buford wrestlers take 2 mat wins

    The Buford High School wrestling team improved to 18-10 with a sweep of North Central and Class AAA Fairfield Central at NCHS on Tuesday night.

    The Jackets downed the host Knights, 45-27 and took a 64-12 win over Fairfield Central of Winnsboro.

    In the win over the Knights, the Jackets posted five pins.

    BHS winners by falls included Devin Jenkins (113), Blake Bailey (145), Matthew Wallace (152), Webber Moore (160) and Trey Bobbitt (195).

  • Warriors fall twice to Yellow...

    INDIAN LAND – Fort Mill, in a rematch with Indian Land High School, repeated for a non-region sweep of the Warriors on Thursday night in the Warriors’ gym.

    The game was originally set for Dec. 8 at ILHS, but postponed due to icy road conditions cancelling after-school activities that day – a Friday.

    In the first meeting on Dec. 15 at Fort Mill, the host Yellow Jackets buzzed to a pair of wins over the visiting Warriors – 58-52 in the boys game and 68-11 in the girls contest.

  • Thompson ready for Down Under...

    Lancaster High School junior track runner Kendrick Thompson does his share of distance running and his effort is taking him a ways in the near future.

    This summer, the Bruins track standout will compete in the Down Under Sports track and field events for the 18th annual International Games July 8-18 in Gold Coast, Australia.

    The 2018 Down Under Sports program features competition in football, cross country, golf, track and field, basketball and volleyball.

  • Gardner leads Stinger Wrestling...

    Ashton Gardner led the way as the Buford Stinger Wrestling Club competed in the 2018 Tough Time SC East Showcase at Socastee High School on Saturday.

    Gardner, one of six Stinger youth wrestlers in the 350 wrestler field, won the 12U 100-pound weight class with a 3-0 effort on the day.

    Maddox Hunter, in the 8U 52-pound weight class, placed third with a 3-2 showing.

    Sam Hunter, competing in the 8U 52-pound weight class, finished fourth with a 2-2 effort.

    Tanner Sellers, in the 12U heavyweight class, finished fourth with a 2-2 showing.

  • Junior Jackets net hoops wins

    The Buford Junior Jackets basketball team notched a 47-31 win over Cheraw on Tuesday night.

    BHS jumped to a 15-8 lead in the first period, and the Junior Jackets, with an 18-8 surge, continued their solid play, taking a 33-16 lead at the half.

    The BHS jayvees forged a 41-26 spread after three periods on the way to the 16-point win.

    Tyson Miller led the Junior Jackets with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

    Glen Collins hit 14 points, hauled in two boards and made four steals.

  • Warriors blitz Griffins for split

    INDIAN LAND – The Indian Land Warriors started strong on the way to a 67-53 win over Fairfield Central of Winnsboro on Tuesday night.

    The Warriors’ 14-point win gave ILHS a split in the Region IV-AAA varsity twin bill.

    The winless Lady Warriors, who dipped to 0-14, dropped a 52-16 loss in the girls game.

    The boys game saw Indian Land bolt to a 13-2 lead and the Warriors remained in control for the victory over the Griffins.

  • BHS Jackets jolt Braves, 81-76

    BUFORD – The Buford Yellow Jackets highlighted a Region IV-AA split, taking an 81-76 win over Cheraw on Tuesday night at BHS.

    Buford, bolstered by a balanced attack, rallied from a 34-29 halftime deficit to take the five-point win over the Braves.

    The Jackets’ comeback win snapped a two-game CHS win streak.

    In the girls game, Cheraw posted a 46-37 win, giving the Braves a split.
