  • Dreher ends LHS boys’ soccer run

    Dreher of Columbia put the brakes on the Lancaster High boys’ Class AAA postseason run, taking a 3-1 win at Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.
    Ian Devin scored two goals and Derian McKnight tallied the Blue Devils’ other goal in the DHS road victory.
    Dreher improved to 22-1 with the road win. The Blue Devils hosted Midlands rival A.C. Flora on Saturday.
    Zeke Williams scored the Bruins’ lone goal.

  • Vols card region golf title

    The Andrew Jackson Volunteers golf team added another jewel to their Region IV-AA links crown.
    The Vols notched their fourth straight region golf championship, posting a two-day 619 (300-319) to win the Region IV-AA golf tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club.
    AJ senior Caleb Brown, who has signed to play golf at Spartanburg Methodist College, led the 37-3 Vols with a 148 (75-73) on Thursday.
    “I’m so proud of Caleb,” AJ coach Heath Brewer said. “He played awesome over two days at the tournament.

  • Annual Blackwell tourney has...

    A beautiful spring day greeted 111 golfers April 30 when they competed in the 15th annual Matt Blackwell Foundation Golf Tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club.
    The team of Jerry Pardue, Shane Brewer, AJ golf coach Heath Brewer, and AJ golf standout Logan Sowell topped the 28-team captain’s choice field, carding a low-net score of 48.4.

    Can’t quite recall the situation on our way to Rice Elementary that
    morning, but it seems in the area of Woodland Drive and Laurel Court, Mama, at the wheel of our family station wagon, offered some sage advice.
    I wasn’t feeling quite up to par and school, to say the least, wasn’t my top priority that morning, but Mama, not about to turn the car around, gave me a good verbal dose to get me “turned around” as we drew closer and closer to Rice.

  • Boone boosts Buford to 1-0 win...

    Heads-up Hannah Boone scored the winning run as Buford notched a tough 1-0 win over Chesnee High School in the Class AA Upper State championship softball series.

    Boone, in the Lady Jackets’ eighth, reached on an error by the CHS shortstop on her grounder.

    A throwing error allowed Boone to reach and she dashed to second on the throwing error.

    The Lady Eagles’ first baseman, in hopes of getting Boone, threw wildly to the CHS second baseman and the ball got by the Chesnee outfielders and an alert Boone dashed home with the winning run.

  • Lady Bruins win district for...

    The Lancaster Lady Bruins softball team bounced back to keep alive their Class AAA playoff hopes.

    Lancaster, unbeaten in the double-elimination Class AAA Upper State District II softball playoffs, needed one win to advance to the Class AAA Upstate title series on Friday when the LHS girls faced Wren High of Piedmont at home.

    Wren denied the Lady Bruins with a 6-2 win, but the resilient Lady Bruins responded with a 5-1 victory over the Lady Hurricanes.

  • Coker signs Warriors’ Faulkner

    INDIAN LAND – Indian Land High School senior track standout Kace Faulkner is throwing his future to Coker College.
    Faulkner, a two-time Region IV-AA shot put and discus champion for the Warriors, is going to the Hartsville school to continue his education and track career.
    Faulkner made his choice official last Friday when he signed with the Cobras in the ILHS media center.

  • Lady Jackets roll to title

    The Buford Lady Jackets blitzed Strom Thurmond High, rolling to a 10-0 home win over the Lady Rebels in five innings Wednesday to win the Class AA Upper State District IV softball championship.
    BHS, 19-4, advances to face Chesnee in the opening round of the Class AA Upstate title series tonight at 6.
    Buford banged out 13 hits and Lady Jackets’ ace hurler Sydney Sullivan hurled a one-hitter and struck out 10 STHS batters. Sullivan aided her cause with a RBI.
    Morgan Deese had a stellar night at the plate with three hits, including a solo home run.

  • Bruins edge Wren in soccer...

    Lancaster High School had a mixed bag on the pitch Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium.
    The Region III-AAA champion LHS boys advanced in the Class AAA Upper State playoffs, rallying for a 2-1 win over Wren.
    The news wasn’t as good for the LHS girls, who also won the region, but dropped a 2-1 overtime loss to Daniel of Clemson.
    In the boys match, Wren took a 1-0 halftime lead, but the Bruins responded on a pair of Zeke Williams goals.
    Williams connected on a free kick from 20 yards out and later scored on a penalty kick.

  • Dogs ‘squeeze’ out win to end...

    Camden’s John Bailey squeezed home the winning run to spark the host Bulldogs to a 6-5 elimination game win over Lancaster in the Class AAA Upper State District I baseball playoffs on Wednesday at Legion field in Camden.
    Bailey had three hits on the night for the Dogs.
    Camden’s game-winning rally came after Lancaster, down 5-3, rallied to score twice to tie the game at 5-all after six innings.
    Austin Catoe’s clutch two-run single tied the game at 5.
    LHS built an early 3-0 edge, but CHS, 19-8, rallied to tie the game.
