    For the eighth straight week, clouds loomed over Lancaster Motor Speedway, again looking as if it would bring the dreaded word all race fans hate – rain. But Mother Nature relented and for the second straight week, the track got in a full event between brief showers.First up was the young guns. Starting on the front row were a pair of previous winners, Andrew Blackwood and Austin Baker.

    Andrew Jackson rolled to an impressive 8-0 win over Loris in the opening round of the Class AA Lower State soccer playoffs on Tuesday.The 18-1 Vols' lopsided win sends AJ to a second-round home match against Barnwell on Thursday. Barnwell downed Buford in an opening round playoff match.Jason Faile led the Vols with three goals and Oliver Wall netted two goals. Cory Gardner, O'marr Truesdale and William Bridges each added one goal. Gardner had an assist as did Tyler Stroud.

  • CHS Rams win III-A golf title

    Chesterfield shot a 319 to capture the Conference III-A golf title on Wednesday.The Rams were led by tournament medalist Dalton Harper who shot a 78. Ian Harper, an all-region pick, followed with a 79 to boost CHS. Cody Gainey also earned all-region honors for the Rams with an 80.Great Falls was second with a 359.

  • Lancers gearing up for first...

    The University of South Carolina-Lancaster baseball team won't play a game for another five months, but the program's first-ever team is beginning to take shape.

    By the time the Lancers host open tryouts in August, USC-L coach Mike Prochaska said he will likely have 55 players.

    Since January, Prochaska has been working with a group of 13 USCL students who are striving to be a part of the team.

    The number actually was 30, but is now down to 13.

  • Soccer teams open playoffs

    County soccer teams launch their state title hopes this week as postseason play opens in all classes.The girls begin playoff action Monday, with the boys’ teams slated to open play Tuesday.Andrew Jackson and Indian Land will have girls’ teams involved in the Class AA playoffs.The IL girls host Greenville Tech in the opening round Monday at 6 p.m.

  • CMP hosts One Lap of America

    Carolina Motorsports Park will host One Lap of America on Wednesday.One Lap of America is a racing series similar to the Cannonball Run format.Drivers go from race track to race track with the goal of being the fastest at the track on that day.The series features 7-8 tracks, according to Jochen Tartak of CMP.The competition is open to the public and will be held between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

    Christ Church won a hard-fought battle to take a 2-1 extra-inning win over scrappy Indian Land to advance to the Class A Upper State championship baseball series on Wednesday night.
