  • Rec stars to launch postseason...

    Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Commission youth football all-star teams open postseason play Monday.

    The Lancaster County North small fry all-stars, ages 8-9-10, launch play at Fort Mill High School where they face Tega Cay at 6:30 p.m.

    The game is the first of a small fry all-star football twin bill involving county teams.

    The Lancaster County South small fry all-stars launch their hopes with a 7:45 p.m. game with Leroy Springs Recreation.

    The winners will advance to the second round later this month.

  • AJ's Faile signs with Pats

    KERSHAW – The mid-afternoon buzz in the Andrew Jackson High School media center Friday wasn’t just about the end of the school week.

    It was more about the start of a college athletic career as Lady Volunteers’ star shortstop Tristan Faile signed a softball scholarship to play at Francis Marion University.

    A beaming Faile signed her papers as happy teammates, teachers, family and AJ principal Mary Barry and Lady Vols’ softball coach Steve Middleton witnessed her signing with the NCAA Division II school in Florence.

  • Playoff game postponed

     The Lancaster Vs. Greenwood playoff game has been postponed to 6 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood.

  • Great Falls wants to keep on...

    Great Falls High School coach Ken Schofield said his team isn’t looking forward to a return trip to the Class A championship game. In fact, he said, the team isn’t even looking forward to its next game.

    “We want to get three more practices,” Schofield said. “That’s all a win this time of year gets you. If you win, you get three more practices. Nothing else is assured.”

  • Buford, AJ cheer squads compete...

    Cheer teams at Buford and Andrew Jackson high schools will be bidding to earn a berth to the Class A-AA state cheer competition on Saturday.

    Buford High School, the defending Class A-AA Lower State champion, will be defending its title at Lexington High School.

    The Jackets’ squad, led by veteran coach Julie Thompson, has done well during its cheer competition this fall, including a first at the Trojan Invitational in Rock Hill earlier this fall.

    It’s no secret the Lancaster High School defense has been a major factor in the playoff-bound Bruins’ 8-3 season.

    Senior linebacker Dawan Thompson has played a key role in the LHS stop unit’s sound play.

    Through 11 games, Thompson, a North-South All-Star game selection, has racked up 95 tackles, seven sacks, a caused fumble and a fumble recovery, which went for a touchdown in the Bruins’ 9-0 homecoming win over Ridge View.

    BATESBURG - Batesburg-Leesville scored on its first six possessions plus had a 47-yard pick for a touchdown to roll past Andrew Jackson, 59-28 in a Class AA Upper State opening round playoff game at Batesburg on Friday.

    B-L, 8-3, also forced five AJ turnovers to end the Vols' season at 5-6.

    "They came out of the gate quick and made some plays early," AJ coach Louis Clyburn said. I told our team at the half (down 49-14) to go out and play hard and have fun.
