  • Bruins roll to Wheels wins

    The Lancaster Bruins are on a roll in the annual Wheels Invitational high school baseball tournament in Rock Hill.

    The Bruins surged to their third straight win, belting Brooke Point High (Va.) 7-1 on Saturday morning to cap play.

    Senior right-hander Mike Catoe scattered four hits and walked one to go with seven strikeouts in LHS’s  six-run win over the Black Hawks.

    The 2008-09 high school basketball season offered quite a challenge to second-year Andrew Jackson boys coach Dale Reeves and his Volunteers.

    AJ answered in flying colors.

    The Vols entered the season, their first in revised Region IV-AA, which featured three schools ranked in the Class AA boys preseason top 10. The elite trio included No. 4 Keenan, No. 8 Central of Pageland and ninth-ranked Eau Claire  of Columbia.

  • Devils top Jackets 4-0

    Great Falls High School senior right-hander Gaither Bumgardner tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 to key the Red Devils to a 4-0 Region III-A baseball win over Buford at the GFHS field on Wednesday.

    The game was originally set for Tuesday, but a late afternoon thunderstorm caused GFHS officials to postpone play to Wednesday.

    Bumgardner gunned the Red Devils’ offense with a two-run homer and a solo blast.

    BHS, 3-6, 5-8, had a hit each from Joseph Wright and Britt Wells. Wright also reached after twice being hit by a pitch. Justin Altman drew two walks.

  • IL's Jacobus, Williams lead...

    The Lancaster County 2008-09 girls basketball season belonged to the Indian Land Lady Warriors.

    Veteran Lady Warriors coach Tamara Jacobus and standout sophomore guard Mariah Williams swept top honors for the county girls basketball campaign.

    Jacobus guided the Indian Land girls to a 19-5 mark, which included an unbeaten 12-0 record and the Conference III-A regular-season championship.

    Williams was the Lady Warriors catalyst, averaging a county’s best 13 points and 3.4 assists per game.

  • Palmetto Lightning strikes gold...

    The Palmetto Lighting struck gold in the Zaxby’s Tournament of Champions, a 10-under Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) tournament on March 28-29, in Forest City, N.C.

    The Lightning captured the title with a 28-12 win over the Stanley Lady Ice.

    Alexis Williams led the Lightning with 12 points. Elizabeth Scott netted six and Summer Vick chipped in four. Deja Patterson, Amirah Steward and Michaela Coates added two points apiece.

  • Buford 2nd in tourney

    The Buford Lady Jackets finished as the runners-up in the Cougar Invitational at York Comprehensive High School on Tuesday.

    The Lady Jackets went 3-1, falling to Class AAAA Clover 6-1 in the championship game.

    In the title game, the Blue Eagles forged a 6-0 lead before BHS struck for a run in the seventh when Lindsey Pressley drove in Jena Hallman.

    Pressley had a hit and drove in a run. Hallman had a double and scored a run. Hannah Knight added a hit for the Lady Jackets.

  • LHS golfers clip Falcons

    The Lancaster High School golf team evened its record at 7-7, 2-2 in region play, with a six-shot win over Nation Ford High School of Fort Mill on Wednesday at the Lancaster Golf Club.

    LHS posted a 165 to the Falcons’ 171.

    “It was good to win and we hope to use the victory to build a little consistency,” Lancaster High School golf coach Jerry Perry said.

    The Bruins were led by Wil Riggins’ 40 and Pat Marshall followed with a 41. John Heath and Dillan Waldrop each carded a 42.

  • Packed track views exciting race...

    A massive field of 100-plus cars packed a crowded infield, setting up for what would be a great racing night at Lancaster Motor Speedway on Saturday.

    u The young guns were the first main event. 2008 champ Andrew Blackwood regained his winning ways, piloting his Rock Hill Collision Center No. 57 racer to the win.

    Johnny Kline of Rock Hill finished second, but the spot was forfeited due to a post-race inspection. Brandon Blackmon, the teen driver who had his car heavily damaged by the incident in the infield during the previous race – finished second.

  • Buford golfers deck Warriors

    The Buford High School golf team remained unbeaten in Conference III-A play at 6-0 with a 163-208 win over county rival Indian Land at the Lancaster Golf Club on Thursday.

    Senior Trevor Banks led the 10-2 Jackets with a 37. Taylor Banks followed with a 39. Jalen Terry carded a 40 and Jimmy Taylor posted a 47 in the Jackets’ 45-shot win.

    Jared Long led IL with a 47 and Clay Holcomb shot a 49. Parker Whittaker had a 54 and David Venditti finished with a 58.
