  • Sumter halts Blue stars’ state...

    The Lancaster Dixie Boys Blue 13-year-old all-star baseball team was hoping for a deeper run in the state tournament, but fell short in its diamond quest at Citizens Park in Aiken.

    Sumter, which went on to capture the state tournament and a bid in the Dixie Boys 13s World Series in Seneca, derailed the Lancaster Dixie Boys Blue team’s hopes in a 5-3 win earlier this week.

    Lancaster, which went 1-2 in the tournament, held a 3-1 lead to the fifth inning when Sumter scored four unearned runs to take the lead.

  • Gamecocks picked to win SEC East...

    For the first time since joining the Southeastern Conference in 1992, the South Carolina Gamecocks are the preseason favorite to win the Eastern Division, according to a poll of media members attending the SEC Media Days in Birmingham.

    The defending Eastern Division Champion Gamecocks received 931 points, outdistancing Georgia (794) and Florida (731) for the top spot in the East.

    Carolina received 114 first-place votes, compared to 38 for Georgia and 12 for Florida.

  • Small tourney stakes high

    Age division titles and bids to the S.C. Junior Golf Association all-star state tournament will be on the line Monday and Tuesday when the Lancaster chapter of the SCJGA caps its season with the annual Roy Small Junior Championship at the Lancaster Golf Club.

    Eight age division crowns will be decided over two days of play at the LGC where play begins Monday morning.

    The Lancaster Dixie Baseball Ozone district champions will open state tournament play Saturday in Sumter when the LDB stars play Sumter American at Patriots Park at 12:30 p.m.

    University of South Carolina junior pitcher Steven Neff will bypass his remaining eligibility with the Gamecocks to sign a contract with the San Francisco Giants.

    The Carolina Bulldogs, a minor league football team owned by Matt Carnes of Indian Land, is on top of its game this season. 

    The team, which includes several Indian Land players, is undefeated at 4-0.

    In the Gridiron Developmental Football Game of the Week on  July 9, the 11th-ranked Carolina Bulldogs faced the 10th-ranked Asheville Grizzlies at Joe Collins Stadium in Chester.
