    RICHBURG – He grew up in Denmark, South Carolina and now lives in the Charlotte area, but when he first visited Lewisville High School, Larry Davis said he felt right at home.

    A trio of county teams will launch their 2011 prep football scrimmage schedules today.

    Lancaster, after returning from preseason camp at Camp Bob Cooper in Summerton, will travel to Chesterfield to face the Class A Rams and Class AA Lee Central Stallions at 6 p.m.

    No strike here as preparations for the 2011 Lancaster County high school football season begins.
    Buford and Lancaster had the early jump with opening practices Friday.
    The Bruins, under coach Bennie McMurray, hit the field for a morning workout at 8. The LHS team also practiced at 6 p.m. Friday.
    The Bruins held an 8 a.m. practice Saturday.
    Lancaster will return to practice Monday at 8 a.m. and depart for preseason camp Monday afternoon.

  • Junior golfers wrap up season

    The Lancaster chapter of the S.C. Junior Golf Association wrapped up its season this week with the playing of the two-day Roy Small Tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club.
    “We were extremely fortunate to be able to complete two days of golf with the weather being what it was,” said Raymon Chisom, Lancaster chapter director. “The heat brought in a large storm that dumped a lot of rain on the course Monday night, but Phil Small and Ross Baker, along with their staff had the course in excellent condition Tuesday morning.

  • Tough loss ends Ozone all-stars...

    The Lancaster Dixie Baseball Ozone all-stars had a tough finish in the state tournament at Sumter’s Patriots Park on Thursday night.
    Sumter National, the same team which defeated Lancaster in its state tournament opener, scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 3-2 win.
    Sumter NL’s Ryan Touchberry, on a 2-1 pitch and a runner at third base, belted a two-run homer to lift the home team to the one-run win.

    BUFORD – A familiar face at Buford High School is taking on a new role.
    Jackets’ head football coach Mike Wells, a 28-year veteran of coaching at the Lancaster County Class AA high school, is BHS’s new athletic director.
    Wells, a Ware Shoals native, takes over the Jackets’ athletic director duties after Buford High School principal Jonathan Phipps handled the chores last year.

  • IL’s McIlwain signs with Falcons

    Former Indian Land High standout football player Kamaal McIlwain just signed to play with the Atlanta Falcons. McIlwain, who played for Newberry College, was one of 22 free agents who signed with the Falcons, according to the Falcons website.
