  • Lady Bruins sweep to track...

    The Lancaster High School girls track team compiled 133.5 points to win a four-way meet.

    Indian Land was second with 44.5 points, North Central and Lewisville followed with 20 points each.

    Following are the meet results:

    4x100: 1. LHS, 53.19 (Eldrina McIlwain, Miteka Trueheart, Brittany Steward, Porsha Cloud), 2. IL 54.72

    4x800: 1. LHS, 13:08.89 2. IL 15:54.34

  • Blackwood blazes in LMS young...

    The old adage “third times the charm” held true for Lancaster Motor Speedway fans and drivers Saturday night.

    After two straight rainouts, clear skies greeted the eager crowd as the 2008 season opened.

    First up was LMS’s newest class, “young guns.” This division was started to give younger drivers a chance to cut their teeth before facing veteran drivers.

  • Buford, AJ advance in Azalea

    Buford and Andrew Jackson have advanced to the single-elimination title round of the 18th annual Azalea Invitational softball tournament at Summerville.

    The Lady Jackets of Buford are 2-2 and used a 5-3 win over Williamsport, Pa., to move on to a game with Hartsville today at 9 a.m.

    AJ, which went 2-2 in pool play, plays Berea at 9 a.m.

    BHS sophomore hurler Jena Hallman struck out 12 Williamsport batters in posting the win Tuesday.

    Hallman allowed nine hits, three runs and no walks. Hallman aided her cause with two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

  • Good Friday blessing on Cats...

    The late Lester Robinson was in my thoughts Friday. Lester, the former news editor at The Lancaster News, was on my mind for a couple of reasons. Once dubbed as a “walking encyclopedia” in regards to his vast knowledge of local events, no matter the subject, Lester also had a good sense of humor.One reason I was thinking of Lester was because it was Good Friday, the day of holy week to commemorate Jesus’ crucifixion. Lester’s funeral was on a Good Friday.

  • Jordan's pleased with AJ...

    KERSHAW – Graduation last year cost the Andrew Jackson High School boys’ soccer team 12 players including nine starters and the core of 2007 squad.But seven matches into the 2008 season, veteran Volunteers’ coach Randy Jordan is saying things he said earlier he wouldn’t have said in the preseason.“It’s hard to hear me crying about losing 12 players when we’re seven matches in and haven’t lost yet,” coach Jordan said.

  • Lancaster falls to Cougars

    The Lancaster High School baseball team didn’t have a good Friday, dropping a 9-4 road loss to York in Region III-AAAA play.The five-run loss left LHS at 4-6-1, including a 3-3 region mark.Jordan Workman worked three innings, allowing six hits, two walks and six runs, five earned. He struck out one. Ross Maiden hurled two innings and yielded a run, no hits and two walks.

  • Stallions top LHS in 9-3 win

    Lancaster ventures to York today in hopes of rebounding from a home loss to South Pointe.The visiting Stallions played the spoiler Thursday when they notched a 9-3 win over the Bruins at LHS’s Doomsday Corner.LHS visits York today for a 2 p.m. game.Junior Michael Catoe went five frames and took the loss. He allowed four runs, three hits and a walk. Catoe fanned one. Evan Byrd worked two innings and yielded five runs, four hits and three walks. Byrd struck out one.Bryan Gainer led the Lancaster offense with two hits and a run batted in.

    Andrew Jackson High School athletes Trent Flowers and Julius Catoe advanced to the state strength meet after placing in the region strength competition at Lugoff-Elgin High School on Wednesday night.Flowers won his weight class in the 180-pound class.

  • Saturday Before Easter tourney...

    The fifth annual Saturday Before Easter Omega golf tournament will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Lancaster Golf Club.The tournament entry fee is $50 for non-members of the Lancaster Golf Club and $30 for Lancaster Golf Club members.The format is a modified captain’s choice tournament. Teams will be drawn by tournament officials.Play is four participants per team and on each hole all four players will tee off. The best drive will be chosen and each golfer will play his ball from there into the hole.The Top two scores will count.

  • Lady Vols have new faces,...

    KERSHAW – The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers have some new faces this softball season, but they hope for similar results this spring.Gone are five seniors who helped the Lady Vols win back-to-back state championships en route to a dazzling 70-7 record. That quality AJ quintet was stellar, but the Lady Vols return five key starters along with a solid nucleus which has the 2008 team upbeat.In softball, it starts with pitching.
