  • Bruins face diamond challenge

    Over the past two springs, the Lancaster High School baseball team has won 33 games, including 18 victories last season.

    With the loss of 11 solid seniors, the Bruins will face a challenge in seeking to continue their diamond success.

    "A year ago at this time, we had our share of veterans," said LHS coach Steve Williams, who is 184-176 since becoming the Bruins' baseball coach in 1993. "This year, we're going to look to our seniors to give us solid leadership."

    Former Indian Land High School head football coach and athletic director Mike Pope was recently presented the Celebration of Life Through Sports Award from The Sporting News.In The Celebration of Life Through Sports Award, athletics is a way to bring friends, families, and communities together.Three years ago, in a move to save his life, Pope had his legs amputated below the knees. His body was ravaged by diabetes and staph infections.

    Three Lancaster County prep wrestlers advanced to battle for individual state championships this weekend.Lancaster High School’s Dawan Thompson is bound for the Class AAAA state meet at Irmo High School, while Buford has a pair of wrestlers – Lamont McPhearson and Rashad Cunningham – in the hunt for Class A-AA state crowns at Gilbert High School.Thompson, a junior, placed fourth in the Class AAAA Upper State meet on Saturday.He went 3-2 to advance his record to 29-8 for the season.“Dawan wrestled hard and performed wel

    Indian Land High School athletic director Mike Mayer ranks the schools new weight facility with the states best.

    The Warriors weight room, located in the gym area of the new high school, is complete with new weights.

    A total of $29,495 was raised to purchase the new equipment which is featured in the weight room.

    Our goal was $30,000 and all this money to pay for the equipment was raised from private donations, said Mayer, who made the first donation of $1,000 a year ago. We raised that $29,000 in about nine months. It was all paid for by the first day of school.

  • IL United soccer team showing...

    The Indian Land United indoor soccer team took an early exit from the playoffs, but coach Tony Sweatt said the season was a success.

    The IL United, in its second season playing in the Charlotte area league, fashioned a 5-2-1 record.

    The United went 5-1-1 in regular-season play, but lost to Ardrell Kell 4-0 in the playoffs on Saturday night (Feb. 9) at the Sports Connection in Charlotte. The team finished fourth in a 12-team league heading into postseason play.

    The 2006 Indian Land United posted only one win.

  • Lions' Robinson signs with...

    RICHBURG - Antwan Robinsons mother, Gloria Gladden, said Thursday was a blessing. The coaches and administration at Lewisville High School said having Antwan around for the last four years was a blessing to them.

    Robinson, a Lions' football standout, signed on Thursday with North Greenville College.

    Robinson received looks from a number of schools and had firm offers from Presbyterian College and Campbell. The Crusaders, though, were offering exactly what he was seeking.

  • LHS girls playoff foe

    A week ago, we had four county high school basketball teams set to make a postseason run.

    Now as far as the 2007-08 prep hoops campaign goes, all we have now are the hardwood memories.

    The quartet included three girls squads AJs Lady Vols, Indian Lands Lady Warriors and the Lancaster High Lady Bruins. The lone boys team was the AJ Vols.

    On Tuesday, the girls trio bowed out in three road defeats.

    The toughest loss was Lancasters 46-42 season-ending setback to Spartanburg High School, the Region II-AAAA champion.

  • County wrestlers quest for crowns

    Three county prep wrestling teams head to different mat locales this weekend, but their goals are the same.Buford, Indian Land and Lancaster teams launch state championship hopes in the individual high school wrestling championships.Indian Land and Lancaster will compete in Upper State meets for their respective classes. Buford ventures to the Lower State in launching its postseason grappling hopes.The tournaments open today and continue through Saturday.
