    Andrew Jackson High School baseball coach Andy Morton is confident the Volunteers can shine on the diamond this spring.Morton, the AJ jayvee baseball coach last season, is upbeat with the return of seven starters to the Vols’ lineup this season.The veteran cast includes MVP Daniel Pardue along with Josh Eubanks, the team’s Offensive Award winner last season, and Defensive Award winner Greg Cook.Pardue, a junior, returns at shortstop to solidify the heart of the AJ defense, which includes senior second baseman Eubanks along with senior catche

  • LHS booters face challenging...

    First-year Lancaster High School soccer coach Bo Sylvia said the Bruins are starting from scratch, but are shooting to make their mark in time.“We know we’re in a complete rebuilding mode,” said Sylvia who will be guiding a team which won only two matches last season. “We’re facing a challenge, but we look forward to the challenge. We hope to have a surprise or two this season.”Sylvia, a Panama native, has coached high school soccer in Missouri, N.C. and S.C.

  • Volunteers crown Knights

    Andrew Jackson capped play in the North Central preseason baseball tournament, taking a 12-4 win over the Knights on Wednesday at the NCHS field.

    AJ sophomore Dylan McKittrick was the winner, working four innings and fanning five batters. Lance Horton went three innings to notch the save. He struck out three.

    Daniel Pardue led the Vols' 10-hit attack with three hits and a walk. Senior catcher Greg Cook rapped two doubles. Justin Hinson added a triple for the winners.

  • Lancaster County stars open play...

    The Lancaster County Parks and Recreation Department will have six youth basketball teams in action this weekend.All six squads will be vying for the Central District championships Saturday.The 10-under girls team, coached by Derek Vick, travels to Forest Lake Park in Columbia to take on Fairfield County in a first-round game at 11:15 am.The 10-under boys have two teams traveling to Columbia and both will play at Trenholm Park.

  • Classic kicks off play Friday

    The first Rose City Soccer Classic kicks off play Friday at Lancaster Memorial Stadium.

    The two-day-event, which involves all four county high school boys' teams, will continue Saturday with four matches on tap starting at 11 a.m.

    The Classic's opening match has tournament host Lancaster meeting Indian Land at 5:30 p.m. The second match of the opening night pits Conference VIII-AA foes Andrew Jackson against Buford at 7.

  • Buford rebounds, rips Stallions

    Buford rebounded from a pair of losses to blank Lee Central of Bishopville 15-0 on Monday in the North Central preseason baseball tournament.The Jackets’ Colt Ellis was the winning hurler, going four innings and fanning eight. He allowed two hits and a walk.Gavin Flynn led the Buford offense with two hits.

    A year ago, the Buford High baseball team finished as the Region VIII-AA runner-up.Jackets’ coach Joe Wright said his team can again be in the thick of the battle this spring.“We have a good group of players back this season,” Wright said. “Defensively, we have a sound team and our hitting will come around with some of our younger players gaining experience.

  • LHS honors fall-winter stars

    Lancaster High School hailed star athletes at the Bruins' annual fall-winter sports awards night Thursday in the LHS auditorium.

    Standouts in 11 varsity sports as well as top junior varsity and B-team performers were saluted. Coaches also presented letter plaques and participation certificates.

    Senior quarterback Taniel Massey was named the Bruins' football Offensive MVP, while defensive lineman Tyler Canty earned the Defensive MVP.

    Junior guard Michael Catoe was selected the boys basketball MVP, and senior Miteka Trueheart reaped the girls basketball MVP.

  • Saints halt Devils'...

    The Great Falls basketball teams’ seasons ended on a sour note, a game shy of coveted Class A Upper State title tilts at Clemson on Saturday.Calhoun County rolled to a 69-49 win over the Great Falls boys on Wednesday night at Richland Northeast High School.The Saints’ 20-point win sends them to the Class A Upstate championship game for the third straight season.
