    Buford High School senior pitcher Christian Dickson hurled a one-hitter and struck out 14 to pace the Jackets to an 8-1 win over Indian Land in high school baseball play Wednesday.Dickson, in a route job, allowed two walks and an unearned run.Dickson aided his cause with a hit, run batted in and scored a run.The Jackets took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning when Donald Kirkley, who had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice, laced a two-run single.The Jackets added three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh inning to seal the seven-

  • Vols net Rose Classic crown

    Andrew Jackson scored a pair of goals over a five-minute flurry to take a 2-1 win over Lancaster High School and capture the first Rose City Soccer Classic championship on Saturday.The Volunteers’ win capped a 3-0 run in the two-day tournament which was played at Lancaster Memorial Stadium.The field included all four county boys’ soccer teams.LHS, which went 0-1-2 in the tourney, broke on top as Drew Christensen scored off a Ethan Kramer corner kick five minutes into the match.The Vols answered as Daniel Wright tallied a goal to s

  • Faile shines in debut

    Louisiana State University freshman softball player Casey Faile posted her first collegiate win in the Lady Tigers’ 4-2 win over Tulsa in the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge at LSU’s Tiger Park on Saturday.The ninth-ranked Lady Tigers captured the tournament title over the weekend, going 5-1.A former Andrew Jackson High School softball star, Faile allowed two runs, five hits and walked two. She struck out six in the complete-game effort.

  • AJ, LHS battle for Classic title

    Andrew Jackson and Lancaster met late Saturday afternoon to decide the title in the first Rose City Classic at Lancaster Memorial Stadium.

    The Vols entered the clash with LHS with two wins, while Lancaster had a pair of (2-all) ties with county foes Buford and Indian Land.

    Buford and Indian Land met in the third match Saturday, with Lancaster and AJ slated to play in the final match late Saturday afternoon.

    The final two matches were completed after the paper’s deadline for the Sunday edition. See Wednesday’s edition for a report.

  • Jackets confident about campaign

    Buford has an old face in a new place for the Jackets’ 2008 soccer season.

    Leland Summers, who coached the BHS junior varsity team and a former varsity assistant, is the new varsity head coach.

    Summers’ chore is to keep the Jackets’ program among the Class AA elite.

    A year ago, the Jackets fashioned a 17-5 mark and earned a Class AA Lower State playoff bid.

  • Bruins fall to Airport

    Bruins fall to Airport

    Lancaster dropped an 11-5 loss to Airport of Columbia in the third round of the Lake Murray Classic on Wednesday.

    Nick Ferguson led the Bruins with two hits and a pair of stolen bases. Bryan Gainer had two hits and drove in two runs. Trevor Hammond had a hit and a RBI.

    Will Gaston and Josh Warfield each had a hit.

    Warfield worked an inning and allowed four hits and an earned run.

    Michael Catoe went three frames and yielded four hits and a walk. Evan Byrd hurled two innings and gave up three hits and two walks.

  • LHS booters face challenging...

    First-year Lancaster High School soccer coach Bo Sylvia said the Bruins are starting from scratch, but are shooting to make their mark in time.“We know we’re in a complete rebuilding mode,” said Sylvia who will be guiding a team which won only two matches last season. “We’re facing a challenge, but we look forward to the challenge. We hope to have a surprise or two this season.”Sylvia, a Panama native, has coached high school soccer in Missouri, N.C. and S.C.

  • Volunteers crown Knights

    Andrew Jackson capped play in the North Central preseason baseball tournament, taking a 12-4 win over the Knights on Wednesday at the NCHS field.

    AJ sophomore Dylan McKittrick was the winner, working four innings and fanning five batters. Lance Horton went three innings to notch the save. He struck out three.

    Daniel Pardue led the Vols' 10-hit attack with three hits and a walk. Senior catcher Greg Cook rapped two doubles. Justin Hinson added a triple for the winners.
