    WILLIAMSTON – The Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers fell short in their hopes ofa extending their basketball season Friday night.
    The Lady Vols, down by as many as 20 points in the first half, rallied to slice the gap to three only to drop a 51-42 loss to Palmetto High School in the second round of the Class AA Upper State girls basketball playoffs.
    Bre Wright, who scored 13 points, netted seven straight points to close the AJ deficit to 45-42 with 41 seconds left.

    Antlers will abound throughout the Palmetto State as the search for new state record deer antlers gets underway during the S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ annual series of measuring sessions.
      Each year during March, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) measures deer antlers throughout the state, with a major effort during the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic scheduled for March 23-25 at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia.

         Lancaster will be seeking some hardwood revenge Tuesday night when they travel to Dorman High of Spartanburg in the Class AAAA boys Upper State semifinals.

    The 24-3 Bruins survived an upset bid from gutsy Wren to take a 53-52 win over the Golden Hurricanes on Saturday.

    The Bruins’ one-point win sends LHS to Dorman to face the Cavaliers in the Class AAAA Upstate semifinals on Tuesday night.

    Dorman defeated Richland Northeast 43-39 on Saturday night.

    Indian Land High boys basketball coach Nate Smith said he knew the 2011-12 season would be a challenge with the loss of some key players off the 2010-11 hoops team which finished as the Class AA Upper State runner-up to eventual champion Keenan at the Bi-Lo Center in Columbia.

    The game came down to converting clutch free throws and the Andrew Jackson High girls came through.

    The Lady Vols’ Bre Wright hit two critical free throws with 9.9 seconds to play to lift AJ to a 60-58 win over Eau Claire in the opening round of the Class AA girls Upper State basketball playoffs.

  • Lancers sweep, remain unbeaten

    The University of South Carolina Lancaster baseball team improved to 6-0 on the season with a sweep of USC Salkehatchie over the weekend.

    The Lancers took two at the Lancaster High School baseball field, prevailing 18-7 and 13-2 in a pair of games halted after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

    County wrestling teams will now turn their mat focus to the individual state tournament, which begins this weekend with the Class AAAA and Class AA Upper State round.

    The Class AA Upstate tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Crescent High School in Powdersville.
