  • Trueheart eyes elite game

    Lancaster High School senior girls’ basketball player Miteka Trueheart said during her Lady Bruins’ career she’s seen the program rise.

    Trueheart, a five-year member of the LHS girls varsity team, is part of a new level for the program.

    Trueheart has been selected to play in the annual Carolinas All-Star Classic to be held Saturday at Bobcats Arena in Charlotte.

    Tipoff for the game, which features the top senior girls players in the Carolinas, is 12:30 p.m.

  • Jackets' rally tops Warriors

    Buford High catcher Leslie Pressley’s two-run double highlighted a three-run seventh-inning rally which lifted BHS to a 6-5 comeback softball win over rival Indian Land on Friday at the Lady Warriors’ field.

    IL led 5-0 at one point, but BHS kept chipping away with a single run in the fourth, two more in the fifth and three in the seventh.

    Pressley scored what proved to be the decisive run, tallying on a wild pitch after her key double.

    In the IL seventh, the Lady Warriors got a runner on, but she was later picked off by Pressley.

  • Bruins hoping soccer playoff run...

    The Lancaster High School Lady Bruins’ soccer team has been in postseason play for three seasons running.

    The LHS girls, led by coach Lara Johnson, hope to keep the streak going this spring.

    “Every year we set a goal to make it to the playoffs,” Johnson said. “This year is no exception.”

    The Lady Bruins have their share of veterans who hope to lead LHS back to the Class AAAA Upper State playoffs.

    Senior players include Danielle Belk, Paige Brumfield, Lindsey Lyles, Elizabeth Simpson and Tesha Tipton, the team’s goalie.

  • Jackets rally, trip Warriors

    Buford rallied from a 4-0 deficit to post a 6-4 home win over county rival Indian Land on Wednesday.

    Colt Ellis, who worked three innings, was the winning pitcher. He allowed no runs and struck out three. Dillon Hydrick went four frames and yielded four runs, three hits, two walks and hit two batters.

    Senior Christian Dickson led the Yellow Jackets’ attack with two hits. Ellis drilled a hit and drove in a run. Jacob Jamison added a hit inBuford’s two-run victory.

  • Foursome's 147 tops Easter...

    The winning foursome earned $1,000 in the fifth annual Saturday Before Easter Omega golf tournament at the Lancaster Golf Club on Saturday.

    The winning foursome included Larry Westcott, Gary Greene, Wayne Gilliam and Jarvis Jenkins who posted a 147 (72-75).

    “This is a strong score considering the format called for the best two scores on each hole to be used,” said LGC pro Phil Small.

    Westcott had a banner day as he was the close-up winner on No. 7 ($100) and No. 13 ($100 and a Playstation 2).

  • Senior golfers register back-to-...

    Hole-in-one shots are rare, but back-to-back holes-in-one are rarer.

    Nevertheless, a pair of area senior golfers recorded rare back-to-back aces at Bermuda Run golf course on Thursday afternoon.

    Joe Faile, 72, and Ronnie Casey, 61, were playing in a foursome when they registered the consecutive aces on No. 13.

    Faile, playing in a foursome which included Casey, Hubert Brown and Reid Brown, had the first hole-in-one using an 8-iron on the 113-yard shot.

  • Banks paces Jackets to golf...

    The Buford High School golfer Trevor Banks shot a 35 to lead the Jackets to a 165-204 win over rival Indian Land High School at the Lancaster Golf Club on Wednesday.

    Taylor Banks aided the Jackets’ win, posting a 39. Jalen Terry followed with a 42 and Taylor Threatt carded a 49 for BHS.

    Indian Land was led by Chase Hunter, who had a 46. Jerrick Spence and Zach Brigman each shot 51.

    Brandon Thomas carded a 56 to round out the Warriors’ scores.

    LHS booters fall

    The Lancaster High School boys soccer team fell to Nation Ford 1-0 on Tuesday night.

  • Lady Bruins sweep to track...

    The Lancaster High School girls track team compiled 133.5 points to win a four-way meet.

    Indian Land was second with 44.5 points, North Central and Lewisville followed with 20 points each.

    Following are the meet results:

    4x100: 1. LHS, 53.19 (Eldrina McIlwain, Miteka Trueheart, Brittany Steward, Porsha Cloud), 2. IL 54.72

    4x800: 1. LHS, 13:08.89 2. IL 15:54.34

    100HH: 1. Mariah Williams (IL), 17.75; 2. Tyesha Elder (L), 18.59

    100m: 1. Keiosha Robinson (L), 12.38; 3. Eldrina McIlwain (L), 13.09

  • Blackwood blazes in LMS young...

    The old adage “third times the charm” held true for Lancaster Motor Speedway fans and drivers Saturday night.

    After two straight rainouts, clear skies greeted the eager crowd as the 2008 season opened.

    First up was LMS’s newest class, “young guns.” This division was started to give younger drivers a chance to cut their teeth before facing veteran drivers.

  • Buford, AJ advance in Azalea

    Buford and Andrew Jackson have advanced to the single-elimination title round of the 18th annual Azalea Invitational softball tournament at Summerville.

    The Lady Jackets of Buford are 2-2 and used a 5-3 win over Williamsport, Pa., to move on to a game with Hartsville today at 9 a.m.

    AJ, which went 2-2 in pool play, plays Berea at 9 a.m.

    BHS sophomore hurler Jena Hallman struck out 12 Williamsport batters in posting the win Tuesday.

    Hallman allowed nine hits, three runs and no walks. Hallman aided her cause with two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
