  • Vols honor hoops aces

KERSHAW - Andrew Jackson High School recently honored its hoops standouts at an awards cookout at the Lancaster County Class AA School.

Volunteers' senior Jonathan Belk, who led Lancaster County boys teams in scoring with a 14.5 average, was presented the AJ boys MVP Award. Belk also averaged 5.9 rebounds a game this season.

"Jonathan had a good, solid year for us," AJ coach Dale Reeves said. "He was a good leader for us as our only returning starter this season.

  • Belk, Priester reap boys'...

First-year Andrew Jackson High School basketball coach Dale Reeves didn't have a great deal of returning experience this season, but his top returnee did all he could to boost the Volunteers.

AJ Vols' center Jonathan Belk, the team's lone returning starter, produced a solid senior campaign in helping the Vols to a tie for second-place in the regular-season Region VIII-AA race and a Class AA Lower State playoff berth.

Belk, for his steady play this season, was named The Lancaster News' Player of the Year for boys basketball.

  • Williams goes out a winner

Ask retiring Lancaster High baseball coach Steve Williams about his record and you will likely get an "I don't know" shrug of his shoulders.

He's likely to have a better idea these days since it's been printed a couple of times this spring, his final with the LHS program where he's been a player, assistant and head coach.

Still, wins and losses don't, as Williams often says, "float his boat."

Don't get him wrong, he likes to win. He just doesn't keep track.

  • Fourth & Long converts for...

The fourth time was the charm for the Fourth & Long flag football team. Fourth & Long, which includes three players with Lancaster ties, won the Carolina Panthers' couch potato black division championship in the NFL team's fifth annual Weekend Warrior Flag Football Championship tournament March 29-30 in Charlotte.

Games were played at the Panthers' Bank of America Stadium and the team's adjacent practice field. The two-day tournament opened March 29 and concluded the following day when the 2008 champions were crowned in five divisions.

  • Jackets top Vols twice

Buford completed a non-region baseball sweep of county foe Andrew Jackson, topping the host Vols 10-9 on Wednesday night.

BHS downed the visiting Vols 10-5 Tuesday.

Both teams are members of Conference VIII-AA, but the two games are played as non-region games to give the teams a chance to play over the Lancaster County School District's annual spring break.

On Wednesday at Buford Park, the Jackets held on for the one-run win.

  • Boost to weight program

KERSHAW - The Andrew Jackson High School Athletic Booster Club has made a strong commitment to the Volunteers' athletic program.

The AJ Boosters have purchased $60,000 of weight equipment which will be used to help the Lancaster County Class AA school's athletes.

"Our booster club is a group of tireless workers and their goal is to help in any way possible," AJ athletic director Dale Reeves said. "They felt this was where we needed help the most at this point."

Reeves said the old equipment, in the neighborhood of 20 years old, needed replacing.

  • Trueheart solid in all-star play

Miteka Trueheart’s final high school basketball game was much like her final prep hoops season at Lancaster High School.

Trueheart, making LHS girls basketball history, used a workmanlike effort to help the South Carolina all-stars to an 81-66 win over the N.C. stars in the Carolinas All-Star Classic at Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Saturday.

The S.C. stars’ 15-point win was the first victory over the N.C. stars’ since the 2005 game.

  • Meadows to play in Friendship...

Cameron Meadows, a fifth-grade student at North Elementary School, has been selected to participate in the People to People Ambassadors Program in Austria this summer.

Meadows, who will play basketball in the Friendship Games, was selected following a recent interview.

In addition to the basketball, Meadows will visit several World War II sites and learn about Austria’s culture.

The People to People Sports Ambassadors Program was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956.

  • Bruins claw Bearcats

Lancaster High School baseball Senior Night was special, capped by a solid 6-3 win over Region III-AAAA foe Rock Hill High School.

The three-run LHS win marked the final home game for retiring LHS baseball coach Steve Williams, who was honored prior to the start.

“It really was a special, special night,” said Williams. “We came out and played well. Nick gave us a quality effort on the mound.”

  • Bruins wing Eagles in rain-...

The Lancaster High School baseball team made the most of a rain-shortened game, taking a 7-1 road win over Clover in Region III-AAAA play Friday night.

LHS hurler Evan Byrd, 2-0, worked five frames for the win, allowing five hits, two walks and a run. He struck out one.

LHS, 7-9, 5-5, was led by Bryan Gainer, who had two hits, including a double, and drove in five runs. Nick Ferguson, who had a RBI, had two hits as did Michael Catoe and Jimmie Jordan. Josh Warfield had a hit and Brion Strothers drew a walk and scored twice.
